Soldiering/Tech

OK, I have not been able to figure this out myself, so hopefully one of you can explain it.

When Invading (or being invaded) there are two values displayed - one for Soldiering and one for Tecnology. Now, I have invaded many a planet where my own values for the two were much lower than my opponents, and even when the opponent has substantially outnumbered me I have still kicked but. At other times, I have invaded with both of those values higher than my opponent and my butt is the one that gets kicked, even when I have the numerical advantage.

So, what do those two values mean? Are they anything to be concerned with? Is there a way to tell what they might be before committing to an invasion?

Oh, I usually win when I invade, but lose when I am invaded, no matter the numbers or odds. Why?

The attacker always gets an advantage because having cleared the planet's orbit of defence ships, they can land troops whenever and wherever they want.  Attackers also get to use invasion tactics such as gas warfare to tip the odds more in their favour.

A defender can improve their planetary defence capability by building Planetary Defence improvements, which may explain why your invasion fails sometimes.

Finally there's a bit of randomness (the advantage factor for each side fluctuating prior to hitting Attack) involved.

Adding slightly to MarvinKosh's reply, the invader is given a bonus not reflected in those numbers.  That bonus has been explained by the Devs to represent air superiority, which is inherent in the restriction that invasion transports cannot land troops unless there are no defender ships in orbit.

I have seen AI planets with planetary defense improvements built on them, but I have no idea if the AI ever utilizes any of the invasion tactics available to the human player.

Does anybody know?

Yes, they do. Although I haven't seen too many in TA, I have seen planets lose PQ to invasions in DL and DA.
