Fences very frustrating on Win 7 x64 - crashes Explorer

I have run Fences and Fences Pro on Win7 x64. While I really like it, there is one very frustrating aspect.

Everytime I add a file / folder to the desktop (inside or outside a fence), Windows Explorer crashes, and has to restart. It also happens if I rename a file on the desktop.

Any ideas for a fix / workaround?

Can You give us more information like

What Version of Fences are you running?

any other programs running at the times this happens?

I don't have to have anything else running - any rename or delete action on a file on the desktop will cause windows explorer to crash and restart.

The version of fences I am running is: 1.00.4275 (the latest, I think). It does this on two different installs of Win7 x64 that I have.

I have been using Fences Pro since it was first offered and I had read alot of posts about this problem.

But , Until today I have never had this problem. This morning it happened 3 times.

I am Running Windows 7 Pro x64

Do you have any security applications (antivirus, antispyware, etc) running on your system?

Are you using any other customization software other than Fences?

I run Kaspersky IS 2010, but no other customisation software. I'll try disabling Kaspersky and see what happens.

I look forward to hearing about this. Although I don't use Kaspersky myself, I do run Fences on my win7 x64 box regularly. No complaints here.

Kaspersky tends to be a bit more thorough with things than other security apps, so disabling it may be the way to go.  If Fences is crashing Explorer on any OS it usually means that something is interfering with it or stepping on it's toes.  Security software or other desktop enhancements are usually the culprit.

If I disable Kaspersky 2010, the errors and crashes stop... However, Fences is marked as a "Trusted" application within Kaspersky. I'm not sure what the answer here is - I can't leave Kaspersky stopped forever, but Fences is already "allowed". Perhaps Fences is trying something at a lower level within the OS which KIS is objecting to?

What is excluded?  The Fences app itself is for configuration only, what you see as the fences on the desktop is a .dll loaded into explorer.  Best thing to do would be to whitelist the whole fences install directory in KIS if possible, or the 5 .dlls in the folder.

I have the same problem it is driving me nuts.

I purchased fences pro last week. My windows version is 64bit. Antivirus is avast, firewall is zonealarm.

Both have been disabled with no luck. Still crashing whenever anything is placed on the desktop or if i rename an icon.

Any suggestions would really be appreciated.

Do you have any other desktop enhancement software installed that affects the desktop and may be interfering with Fences?  Also, try verifying your Fences installation through Impulse by right clicking on the Fences entry and selecting "Verify Installation"

I'm having the same problem. When I save, create, rename a file on the desktop, Windows Explorer crashes and starts up again. I have Windows 7, 64 bit build 7600. Gateway M series laptop. Intel Pentium dual core processor.  Running fences pro v.1.00.4275. Explorer also has to restart several times during bootup. I also went into MSCONFIG and disabled everything and tried it again. Windows Explorer still crashed. I really like how this software organizes my desktop. I'm not running any other desktop organizers. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and if you need any more information, I'll be glad to provide it.  Thanks a lot!

I am having the same issue. I am using Vipre from Sunbelt Software.

I finally uninstalled Fences Pro. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling with no luck. Explorer crashes everytime a file is downloaded to the desktop as well as everytime I make a new folder on the desktop. I thought perhaps it was a driver issue but everything is running smooth since Fences was removed.

I did install the most current version through Impulse.

If anyone has any ideas let me know.....

I have Windows 7 x64 and I haven't had it crash yet but icons will randomly jump out of fences, usually when I delete something or if I just double-clicked one of them.

Try uninstalling Fences and then running this file before reinstalling:

Once you run this file, reboot and then reinstall.

Marking the Fences folder as "Exlcuded" within Kaspersky IS 2010 seems to have done the trick. Thanks for the tip.

I have tried all the suggestions given in the numerous posts on this subject and nothing worked but, yesterday I found a way to correct this problem through trial and error since working with Support has gotten me no where on this problem.

Steps I took to fix this Problem

1. Open Fences configuration window choose tools at the bottom choose more tools and uncheck enable fences.

2. Go to Start Menu find the fences icon and right click and choose run as administrator

This seems to correct the problem on my system

I don't know why this is necessary since my user name is set to administrator.

There is a difference between AN administrator and THE Administrator accounts on Vista/7 machines.  Most likely something in your configuration is amok, because running as THE administrator would create new settings under that user account's profile.
