How do you save a game?

Okay, first of all, I'm not a complete idiot.  I have gone to the menu where you're supposed to be able to save your game, but it just doesn't let me.  I can toggle the auto save, but the actual save button is not accesible, and the auto save doesn't seem to work.  Does anyone else have these problems?  Am I doing something wrong?  Do I have to set up some kind of file before it will allow me to save?  Please help.

If thats the case you gotta set a name first before the save button ungreys out.

 

As for the autosave saves about every 15 mins. I can be changed in the setting file, but if you save yourself often its not a big deal. And note that the autosaves are in a different list from user saved files.

Nope I use it acutally more than the acutally save.
