Controlling Portal Minions

I thought I read in the manual that "portal" minions cannot be controlled - they follow their own path.  But I saw keyboard shortcuts like "select soldiers."  I tried that and it selected portal minions and let me start controlling them.  It seems I did that for a couple games, and then when I tried again (perhaps online?) it didn't work anymore.  I could then only select minions I had summoned.

What determines whether I can or cannot select portal minions?  Or am I just imagining things?  And if I'm just imagining things, then what is the point of the "select soldiers" keyboard shortcut?

First of all, you cant select soldiers or any other type of portal minions. Maybe you were imagining things, or maybe simply you confused soldiers with minotaurs.

Second, I dont think there is a keyboard shortcut for "select soldiers", and if there is, maybe it is left from when the game was still in Beta version, where there were other modes that were removed very quickly by the developers (change of mind, bugs, or some other reason).

3rd, you can select all your minions (only if you have a general) with a shorcut key, just your siege idols, or just you monks etc.

There are different shortcuts but only for your own minions.

Creeps or Portal Minions as you call them, act on their own, following always the same path along the map.

You cant control them.

As a general, click the bottom tab in the item shop.

The top four (minion berserkers) are "soldiers"

The middle four (siege archres) are "archers"

The bottom four (monks) are "priests"

Always buy monks as your first purchase. You can control those 6 idols as well as up to 10 spirits at Oak if you are doing a minion Oak build or a hybrid.
