Questions from someone who wants to buy the game

I have not yet purchased Sins of a Solar Empire, but after looking around on the internet and on these forums it looks like a game i would be interested in.

Anyway I wanted to find out some things about the game before I buy.

1. The game seems to need something called Impulse to run, what is Impulse? is it similar to steam in purpose?

2. I want to be able to play this game over a network with a single CD key, is this possible? If so how would I do this?

cheers

Yes and no. Impulse isn't so restriktive as Steam and you don't have to run it in the background or even to have it installed to run a game. But besides that it's basically the same.

As far as i know do you only need the CD-key to registrate the game on Impulse and to download patches.

1) Impulse is needed to patch the game and buy the expansion pack.  You don't need it to install the boxed version or to play the game once you've installed/patched.

2) Yes; I have played network games with one CD-key.

You can download and install Impulse right now if you want, just to have a look at it.  You can find it at http://www.impulsedriven.com.  You do not need to have Impulse running to play (so set it so that it does not load on startup).  The only time I ever open up Impulse is if I want to patch the game.  I think Impulse is very benign, so I wouldn't worry about having to download and install it on your computer.

And yes, you will need to have a licensed and registered version of the game (CD-Key) in order to patch it with Impulse and to play it online (at least over Ironclad Online).  That is the only DRM that this game has, which is really great.  No Starforce, Securom, cdilla, or having to put the CD in the drive when you want to play.
