Object dock capabilities – email alerts?

I have seen where people have created 2 separate icons for the dock for when there is new email and when there is not [similar to the recycle bin when it is full or empty]. My question is do I have to have object dock PLUS to have this work and if so please inform how? If not, how do I make it work with the standard, free Object Dock?

Thanks in advance as I love the program and I will probably purchase PLUS anyway.

Here is what I use, the Check Mail Docklet. It works great after you configure it. I also changed the icons to my liking. I do not know if it works in OD, it does work in OD+.
