All fences are gone on install

I have updated as the program calls for it, but when I do this it wipes out all of my fences..  I love the program, but is there going to be a fix for this?  Am I doing something wrong?  Now getting message about needing to update because(something like this)after Nov 1 needs update if not fences will work in reduced state.  Sorry cannot rem exact error type message.
