Fences - Configure Fences

Nothin' happens

When I Right Click on the desktop and click CONFIGURE FENCES, is something supposed to happen?  I click on it and absolutely nothing happens.  Same crickets chirping only when I try to use the FENCES selection from the START menu.  Nothing.  Not very confidence-inspiring events.

I am having the same issue. I can still click on the desktop and the icons will disappear, but the configure dialog screen doesn't come up. I right click on the desktop and choose 'configure fences' and nothing happens. I've even tried clicking on fences.exe directly.

My OS is Windows XP pro SP3

Using Fences pro v. 1

ATI Radeon HD 2600XT Card

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600

2GB RAM

For those with this issue: Are you using the free version or Fences Pro?  Also, does and uninstall/reboot/reinstall solve the issue?

I am having the same problem.  When I first installed the free version of Fences, I could open up "Configure Fences...".  Later on I could not.  I've just installed Fences Pro with the same problem.

Windows XP Pro  SP3

I have a lot of software that loads up at boot.  I install and un-stall lots of software.  It might be a conflict between software.

I do use a program that I load manually quite often for the desktop:
 "EarthDesk 5" from Xeric Design

I un-installed and re-installed Fences Pro on the Windows XP Pro computer and still have the same problem.  On a Toshiba Satellite laptop with Windows 7 the free version of Fences works like it should.

Does Pro work for you on the Toshiba?

Looks like this problem is still an issue for many. I wasn't able to get this one resolved.

I would like to get to the bottom of this problem, for those of you who cannot see the Fences configuration dialog, can you please do the following?

Create this registry key

WindowsPowerShell way:

Set-ItemProperty -path "HKCU:\Software\Stardock" -name "Debug" -value 1

Windows old command shell way:

reg add HKCU\Software\Stardock /v Debug /t REG_SZ /d 1

Then download debug view (save both of these files) and run debug view:

http://live.sysinternals.com/Dbgview.exe

http://live.sysinternals.com/Dbgview.chm

With debug view open, right click on the desktop and select Configure.  Save the results from Debug View and paste them into a response to this thread.

Also, is everyone experiencing this problem running other desktop applications?  Deskscapes or EarthDesk (listed above) or others?

Thank you.

James,

Are you running any other desktop customization software?

I had this same problem but I found a fix after reading some interesting things in this thread....  It may have to do with a Windows theme.  I just tried out a new theme.  I went back to just a plain background color for the background and poof, settings is back.  Try that and see if it helps all of you out.  Im on Windows 8.1 Pro, 3930k @ 4.2 GHz, 32 GB Ram @ 1866, SSD's, 2 x GTX 970 in SLI.  HOpe this solves it for some users.

And once I had the Settings page open, and changed the theme back, and it worked again.  Im not sure if it will stay or if I will have to change the theme again, but just sharing information with you guys. Thanks.

I also have the issue with Configure Fences doing nothing. The fences themselves were active and working fine, but clicking Configure Fences had no effect.

I uninstalled and reinstalled, deleted the folders between reinstall, removed registry entries, etc, etc. Nothing worked.

It turns out that (in my case) AVG Antivirus 2015 is interfering with the dialog window somehow.

What solved my problem was disabling AVG by right-clicking on the AVG icon in the system tray and selecting "Temporarily disable AVG protection". The Configure Fences dialog works fine then. Once AVG becomes "active" again the problem also comes back again.
