What is the difference?

Hi fellow Sinners, like a lot of people I am switching to Window 7 op system sometime this month and I would like to know which window 7 is best for Impulse and Sins because I have the funds for any of them whether it be Window 7 home premium or prefessional or ultimate? (My rigg is new, using the Intel I5 quad core)

Also what is the difference between for example ultimate and ultimate upgrade other then the price?

Professional is designed for more business needs, while Ultimate is basically Professional and Home Premium combined. You should be just fine with Home Premium for a gaming system.

Upgrade versions have to be installed on a system with a previous version of Windows.

proffesional inclides home. ultimate has nearly nothing additionally. forgot what it was but it is not worth to mention.

for your gameing experience it does not matter what version you take.

Home premium it is, thanks for the quick answers:beer:

Romans 3:23 would disagree with that statement, but that book is old and out of date anyway. }:)

How does this change the experience if (aka when) one needs to reinstall windows because it's gotten gunked up?  Would I have to first install windows XP and then upgrade, every time I have to reinstall?  I don't really believe in a version of Windows I won't need to push the big cosmic reset button on every year or so.

My experience has been that each version can count itself as a previous version, so no problem.

you can not "upgrade" from XP to any version of Windows 7 via the traditional "upgrade path". also, it depends on the version of vista you're running as to which version of 7 you can upgrade to.

http://windows7news.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/windows-upgrade-chart.png

custom = clean install, no upgrade path

you can not switch from 32-bit vista to 64-bit windows 7 via upgrade path.

buy an OEM version. they're cheaper.

better yet, join Technet. get any version of windows 7 you want and all of microsoft's applications.

At the bottom of that chart, there's a line reading, "To upgrade an earlier operating system than Windows XP (e.g. Windows 95 or Windows 2000) you will need to purchase a full license of Windows 7 and perform a custom installation."

So that should mean that anything XP or more recent can use the upgrade license, but has to have a custom installation unless otherwise noted in the chart.

no. if you have xp now, you'll need to do a custom install which means you'll wipe your drive. the only upgrade paths are from certain versions of vista to certain versions of 7. there are NO upgrade paths from xp to 7.

i've installed legit versions 7 on numerous machines. 7 does not allow an upgrade installation on a machine running xp.

keep in mind, what microsoft is calling 'custom' requires an installation of a new OS, not an upgrade of a previous OS. it does not mean to choose what features or options you want to install.

There is a program called Acronis true image 2010

Setup your OS with a fresh install of all the needed drivers, accounting / office software - and then make a disk image..

I use a 16GB USB stick which is bootable, to restore - boot from USB and restore image..

after you make a clean install image - add all your another juck software and make another differantial backup image..

Now you will have a clean install and a loaded install - now you can choose which one to restore..

Now you will never have to re-install, re-activate or re-register anything.. And I can now restore my fully loaded vista or win7 in 15 minutes..

The software sells for $49

The software sells for $49 or you can search for a hacked key

Advocating the use of pirated software is highly frowned upon in these forums.

If your an avid fan of playing games from other countries like Japan and such, do note that only Ultimate has the language packs you'll need to play those.  Without those language packs, I don't think you can even install the games.  Not for everyone to worry about, but a thought if it helps.

Not advocating anything - as the software sells for $49

Call it what you want, it's still frowned upon on any Stardock forum and suggesting it can get you exiled.

it seems microsoft has made it so the pre-order versions of the upgrade discs do not actually ask for a setup disc of a previous os nor look for a previous os on the system. i wonder why they changed it. didn't upgrade discs for vista look for a previous os? anyway, it seems the pre-order upgrade version is the same as the retail full version and the oem version. all can install to a blank hdd without a previous os disc. no idea if the retail version of the upgrade you can buy at bestbuy or other stores allow this.

you'll still need to wipe the hdd if you're upgrading from xp to 7, tho.

on a side note, i hosted a launch party last night. things started out slow but picked up as the evening went by. i'd say 30 to 35 people stopped by before the cookies were gone. i may have sold my ocz reaper ram and V8 cooler, too! i should've tried selling the lian-li 6070 case, too. it was a good evening, i reckon. btw, lightstar has one of the transformer camaros.
