New totem item

I recall some level of grief over the current strategy of teleporting in to re-lock a captured flag just as the prior lock expires, with the proposed solutions being a flag unlock item or a delay on the use of a flag lock after using a teleport scroll or after the earlier flag lock expires.

I think the problem with the flag unlock item is that it may lead to locks becoming useless because they can be quickly unlocked.  Any delay is also problematic because flag locks are often used for defense too.

An alternative solution could be a new flag totem that (temporarily) prevents an enemy flag lock from being used within its (small) radius.  It can be used offensively, to help capture an unlocked flag by keeping it unlocked, and defensively to help re-capture a locked flag by preventing a re-lock, without negating the benefits of a successful flag lock.

Interesting - so, you'd place the item down next to the flag you'd like to prevent from being locked? I think as long as it was limited to one activer totem per player this is a perfect compromise. I think a duration of around 10 seconds or so would ensure that it's not just spammed and is used in a timely manner?

Good idea.

So, your going to use an item near a flag to prevent the other team locking said flag.

I think this is already in the game...it's called a flag lock. ;P

Seriously though, I do get what your point is, but for my money i couldn't see it being used much. Id rather lock said flag and know its safe for a while. I guess there would be some limited use as you approach am enemy flag, cast the totem, prevent team from defensively locking it on you.

But then your carrying around Tele scrolls, cap locks, flag totems....what goes. HP pots? Wand of Speed?

locks just need a slightly longer cooldown. If so, tell your team to go lock it for you to chain it.

its a team game right?

The problem is that once a flag is locked, it's fairly easy to just keep locking it - you literally have to wait the entire duration of the flag lock beside the locked flag and hope you do enough damage to either make the other guys flee, or interupt the flag lock - assuming he's not doing a fake cast.

The real solution is to provide alternatives to Cataract or rework Cat itself. Locks are really only a major issue on that map, and that's practically the only map anyone plays.

It's a map issue.

I would argue that late game locks on Zik or Lev are just as effective. If you can lock the sides (and then easily keep them locked) after giants, the game is over.

The best alternative I've heard is to make flag-locks targetable with a health value (maybe 20-30k hp? or increasing health depending on you war score) so if you really want/need to get it off the flag your team could all attack it together or you could just speed up the process by yourself.
