Q&A for folks playing Beta 1 workaround/kludge installations

The 0.23 patch did not get a kosher instance of the game running on my machine. I can still get going via deleting the FamilyTree file(s) and restoring after the main menu displays. My overall performance seems a bit 'buggier,' although I don't think it's fair to call anything a bug if you've manually mangled your installation.

So, given that it doesn't seem right to try posting 'real' bugs, I'm curious to see what changes other splash->CTD sufferers have seen between 0.22 and 0.23. On the down side, I've found that NUM pad movement is erratic now, with the 1,3,7, and 9 keys often behaving like they were 2,4,6, and 8.

On the up side, I really appreciate being able to turn the Environment Color intensity up. (It does leave me wanting some What's This-type help to explain what colors other than the fairly obvious 'good for a town' green mean.) Seeing that green made me try founding a town by a Great Dragon fountain, and doing that doesn't cost essence for me. But it might make the essence total act wonky--looks like some sort of disappeared when I wasn't looking.

It's also impressive to see the devs get so many little things done in a one-week span even while they're fighting with big stuff like crashes with no workaround. The UI has some art polish already here and there and it looks like the frequency of the hit-point boosting rings is way down, or maybe they're gone.

If you're one of the folks posting in or watching the game will not go past title screen thread or its cousins, how're things going for you?

I figured that we would be of little use until we were able to get a clean install...   so I've personally been less adventuresome than you have been....

I did send my original bug/ctd report.. but after that.. I didn't think I could be of much use until the next step.....

I guess I would be in the passive category.. reading the posts... and waiting until I feel I can be of more use....

Although it has been of no use to anyone.. I still have gone in and looked around for a while.. my experience seems similar to what others have said...  and the screen shots that have been posted looked eerily familar.....   similar ghosts have haunted my screen....

In a twisted, you always want what you can't have sort of way.... this initial experience with the crash to desktop, has only increased my anticipation for the game....  after getting the work around to allow me into the first menu's... it almost felt like I was intruding into the playgournd of the Gods... or some unattainable mystical wonderland reserved for no mere mortals..

I have glimpsed paradise... now I wait..

I still suffer from the same family tree problem, as well.  I wasn't able to get any menus up after trying to restore the file once in the game either, so I have not been testing.  There isn't much point since, like you said, there are many more bugs that messing with the files seem to cause.  Until there is a fix for the family tree CTD and I can test a 'clean' install, I'll keep plyaing Civ IV.

You're really not missing much.  There's currently very little actual "game".

Fortunately this is what this phase is all about, finding major bugs like this.

I've tried every suggested workaround plus an attempt at a fix courtesy of BoogieBac but no luck.  I'm hoping that this week's update is able to get me past the splash screen.

I've never been in denial about the early betas being "no fun." I'm just curious whether anyone else in my situation has played enough with their kludge installation to have noticed something they appreciate in the changes for 0.23, something they might have reported as a bug if their instance was kosher, etc.
