Master of Orion 2 Memories

Released in 1996 by Microprose, Master of Orion 2 Battle at Antares is undoubtably considered the reference for 4x space strategy games. But what made this game so popular that after 13 years of game design innovation, better computer resources and way better available graphics no space strategy game seems to be able to surpass MOO2 success?
I invite you to read my post about MOO2 success at SpaceSector.com

I am sad that both MOO and Imperium Galactica are dead...  I guess IG3 was nearly a done game when Empire Interactive went belly up...

Moo3 was probably the single most disappointing game I ever played.   It was soooo disappointing after Moo2

MoO2 is great for what it is, but remember as Brad himself said in my link below, GalCiv is NOT Master of Orion.

Where to even begin?  MOO2 is one of those exceptional and rare classics like MOM, Warcraft 2, Act Raiser, Ogre Battle, etc.

One thing about MOO2 like the other games mentioned that stands out is the entire package was nicley done.  The atmosphere, graphics, music, etc. all comes together to make the whole better than the parts.  For example, the music and sort of dark and high tech atmosphere portrayed in MOO2 really made me feel like I was leading a galatic empire through desperate times.

Of course, the game play was also fun and stategic.  You could design ships, and space battles were a lot of fun.  Also, planatary invasion graphics were better than they were for galciv 2.

It makes me sad to think that MOO2 was released before I was born, so I never had a chance to play it. It looks like I have been born in the wrong generation for gaming...

Quoting Frogboy, reply 15

I know when MOO 2 was released because I played it in the delivery room on the laptop waiting for my first child to be born.
End of Frogboy's quote

Now that's commitment.

To the mother of your child, and child, I mean.
