Horizontal Screen Stutter

Hi All

Both Entrenchment and Original 'Sins' have had a graphics problem usually after an hour or two of gameplay.

This usually initiates when I like to zoom into a fleet (not huge either) from a Solar System/Galaxy view.

The screen rapidly pulses with horizontal lines toward the bottom of the screen - similar to a TV and probably epileptic siezure inducing stuff.

Strangely it sometimes stops but usually gets worse as play continues - and often resets after I restart the entire program

To narrow the field the following can be ruled out -

1. I have all the latest drivers for my 8800 GT Nvidia

2. Latest versions of Sins and Entrenchment (only dowloaded them a few weeks ago)

3. Never had any similar problems with my Monitor

I do have all my graphical settings to highest possible so maybe I'm pushing the limit of my card but I've haven't had anything like this happen on Crysis for instance.

Thank you to anyone who can help

try messing with the refresh rates found in the video options area

sometimes if the refresh rates are out of sync it can do this

i would say it is most likely monitor related.  do you have a lcd or crt monitor?  can the lcd handle multiple resolutions or is there a "best" res.  is the res of the monitor in windows the same as the res selection in game?

Sigh... yes its the same - its ok I'm not quite that daft but I guess I didn't mention that information yet.

Its a LCD monitor (ViewSonic VA1912wb);

Native res. 1440 x 900

Any more ideas?

does it still get the shakes if you play a long game on lower graphic quality?

if it starts shaking and you save the game.  does it still happen after being away for a few hours?

if everything is high and it only happens after you've played for a while, maybe the video chip sets are over heating.  i know crysis is a hog, but who knows.  maybe a fur ball took up residence and its heating things up.

as i'm reading, i was thinking of it as monitor-related. i had a similar problem before although not with this game. turned out my monitor was busted. i changed it and everything went fine.

Yeah fairly new monitor... 1yr half old.

Does happen more often after it starts... even after re-loading the game only take half the time as before.

Otherwise upon closer inspection my computer had become quite dusty internally - far quicker since my last clean.

Anyway - thanks everyone for the help but I'll get some compressed air and give it all a good clean and that should limit the problems.

All the best

Yeah, that's probably the best (and cheapest) bet.  If you do find you're still having problems, you cn probably isolate the issue by lowering all the graphic settings while keeping the resolution the same just for a test game.  If the issue still occurs (although it might take a bit longer to do so), you may have a graphics card or heat issue.
