Xeno Ethics

So I am wondering what is the deal with Xeno Ethics?  It seems like as soon as I learn it I stop getting random planet events (from colonizing or just for controling planets).

This seems a bit of an advantage if one would go good, afterall most of the time when you pick the "good" options you lose production, money, or at best get nothing.  But if your going evil or neutal, or if your going to pay to be an alignment it turns into a very bad deal.

If one is planning on going neutral or evil, is it more usefull to not take xeno ethics?   It seems like any research you might lose from going neutral is more then offset by exploiting a research planet, and likewise evil's weapons can be offset by a good +ship bonus planet.  If one wanted they could even just wait until they got a bonus they liked and then afterwords build xeno ethics if they really wanted the mind control center or instant buying discount.

In the end then, isnt learning Xeno Ethics really a disadvantage for any allignment other then good?  At least learning it anytime before right near the end of the game..  To me it seems like it should still let you make thoes choices, and just charge you a small fee for every choice you take that doesnt match your alignment..

Most of the events stop once all the planets are colonized, so that's when most neutral/evil players research it. Sure, there a few events not linked to colonization, but not enough to make it cost effective to go without XE.

Note all the bonuses/penalties persist after XE is researched, so you aren't giving up that reseach planet bonus when you get XE. You just get the ability to cram it full of NLCs if you went neutral. Likewise, a ship bonus doesn't go away, so going evil afterward allows you to build even heavier mid-game ships on it with the evil bonus weapons. For that matter, if you took the evil choice and then chose good for XE, the bonus would apply to the defenses you could put on your ships.

I don't know about TA, but one gets access to the small boost of Harmony Crystals when choosing Ethics.  Also, the sooner one gets to the level after that, the sooner one gets the empire-wide ship building bonues (ASC?) and the No Mercy Invasion facility, both of which are valuable in early wars.

Harmony crystals are still there. The techs afterward vary by tech tree, so what you get afterward depends on who you're playing and what you can trade for. Evil civs can only trade for evil techs, but you can still get access to ASC, MCC and NMIC for civs that lack those in their native tree. You just need to wait for someone to research them, which are apparently absurdly low priorities for the AI.

I would prefer the events still occuring, but FORCING you to choose your alignment option - after all the natives/precusor machines don't magically disappear when you have codified your ethics.
