Tech to increase ship size

I have a bunch of starting colony ships that have the 55 points alotted to build onto them for engines, etc. How do I increase that number for more colony modules and such?

miniaturization techs give more space...advances from e.g. laser 1 to laser 5 make add-ons take less space.
