Hello, new in Sins

Some gameplay questions

Hello everybody:

I just recently bought a copy of this game and it is really awesome!

I have just recently won my second game (singleplayer, normal AI) and have some questions about some aspectes of the game:

First of all, i am searching some type of pause function during which i can give orders to my units, is there something like that in the game?

Is there a way of moving units along z-axis? During the game i have seen that the units are at diferent heights and that they independetly move in 3D-space. Is this automated or controlable?

What happens if i destroy all pirate bases in the game? , do pirate raids stop?, What use does a captured pirate base have?

Allmost all ships, especially capital ones, seem to have directional weapons. So it should be possible to gain an advantage by manouvering your ships in order to avoid your enemy´s weapons or (in case of capital ships) main weapons. My question is: Do ships have some kind of directional armor?, in other words, do ships take more damage if they are hit in certain places (for exampe in the rear or at the laterals)?

And the last one: evry time i research a new fleet logistics point, an ever higher amount of my resources is taken as fleet supply (or mainteinance), my question is, is it possible to deactivate those logistics points in order to reduce their cost?

That´s all

Thank you everybody

Pause function - "Pause/Break" button located just above home/end, pg up/down, insert/delete. Beside "Print Screen."

Z-axis - none, it's automated.

Destroy bases - Pirate raids do stop. There is usually only one base per system, and if you destroy it the pirates cannot attack anything in the system. They cannot jump between stars. And it has very little use, other than high planet HP and tac slots. TEC can upgrade them with an extra logistics slot, though...

No directional armor as far as I know.

No, you can't unresearch fleet points.

To my knowledge, pausing can only be done by going to the menu, but Ender seems to say otherwise...

Z-Axis: Actually, I think there is a hotkey for it somewhere, but I don't know...

Yes, destroy their base and they stop shooting at you.  They also have a higher chance to have an artifact...

Actually, there is... On SB's, like the Vas one for instance has a special shield that absorbs more damage in the front than in the rear.  This applies to the other SB's as well in their own ways...

Correct...  It would be nice though as it would give you the ability to rebuild your fleet faster after a major loss...  But, alas, no...

Ender is mostly right, including with the pause function.

I actually have some say for that though. If a game is built for time based play wouldn't pausing and telling your empire what to do be counted as cheating?

As for directional armor, I'm not completely sure, so I can't and won't say one way or another.

Same for Z axis, there used to be a control. Then they took it out. I think it's back in though.

I also have some suggestions for new players in general. First, play through a full game with each faction before deciding which, if any, you want to stick with, and even then play a couple games to try out the different strategies. Second, be careful of unlocked teams since the diplomacy system is messed up until the next expansion. Third, do buy entrenchment, it's really really good (and feels more like something that should have been in the game in the first place, but I didn't say that). That's all I can think of. Will post more possibly.

you can use z axis but you have to set the hotkey yourself. then you have to play around with it to see how it works.

If I remember right, you have to hold it down while dragging the mouse up/down to set it...  Theoretically, mastering the Z axis would give you a tactical advantage...

wait!?! You can use the z axis?!? why did I not know of this before? That would give you insanly powerful statagies! How do you do it?

you have to set the hotkey...  From there, I believe you hold it down while dragging the mouse to give the third coordinate.  The only thing is, unless in formation or told to hold position, ships will automatically fall back down to 0 in the Z plane...  It would enable some very interesting strategies, no question there...  I don't know if you could do this, but if you hid your troops under a planet, you could potentially throw your opponent off, or you could have them positioned above your enemy, giving you a Guillotine strategy...  Throw some ships in at the bottom which will go up and you have yourself a pair of scissors...

but the thing is, your ships will the to travel up and then down just to get the other ships, why not just station yourself around the planet, so that no matter where they come from you are already there.

Ok, thank you all for the answers.

I have been playing somewhat with the game and have noticed that my the computer tends to get struck very often while playing the game. Not that the game goes slow or anything, but that the computer stops working and i have to reset. Does somebody know whats causing this? I am using the latest version of Sins (1.18 I think).

On all other aspects the game runs well, I am impressed by how smooth a game with such a high graphic goes.

On entrenchment: well yes i am waiting a bit to see what happens whit the game, also if the next expansion comes out if there will be some type of discount pack.

Your computer probably doesnt have enough RAM. Try turning the settings down.

The second expansion wont have a discount pack but once all three are out than you can buy a box set for $20 (you save $10).
