Computer problems! PLEASE HELP!

Ok so I just got a new PC and it has some issues. The screen has a whiteish aura on it and if I try to turn down the screen brightness its gets realy dark. That doesnt seem like that big a deal but after a while it gets really annoying.

I am running Vista and my computer is a Compaq Presario CQ60

Try killing the gamma as opposed to the brightness? Perhaps?
