Forum Update - June 2, 2009

Hello everyone!

I just pushed an update to the forums with some heavy performance improvements done to the backend by our database engineer.  A lot of things were changed, so I don't expect this update to be perfect.  Please take a look around, and if you notice any problems or any areas that could use another performance boost, let me know here!

There were also other, minor changes made to the design and back-end structure of the forums.  Most of these are miniscule, so I won't bother to list them, but anything that seems off or wrong is definitely a bug, so be sure to let me know here or via PM!

Uh, oh, I found a problem! And it's really annoying. I was trying to edit a post I wrote here(http://forums.impulsedriven.com/331326/page/1/#1955860), but after i pressed save changes things everywhere got out of control. Spaces were made every which way, and some styles were added/removed. (its a story post, and i was trying to update a chapter, but now its all messed up.) if u look on the first post in that link, that's what happened. :( I tried everything I can think of to change it back to normal, but still nothings happened. Please fix it soon!!!! 8O

Ok, some how all my posts got cloned! Some are doubled or tripled, but I have one that got cloned like 8 times! I assume this happened when the forums got updated but I would like to know if anyone else has had the problem and maybe someone knows why.

"My Posts" menu seems to be listing most of my topics twice.

Where do you see my reply as being #9?

On the quote box. Basically it uses the reply # on the current page, rather than the overall thread. 25 replies per page x 4 pages = 100 replies, reply #9 on page 5.

End of Annatar11's quote

Nope, it keeps only the last two digits of any replies! But if you click on the tiny arrow, you'd switch at the page where it's being quoted from.

And yet, the above should be 29 (duh- 129!) -- so i'm wrong!

There's some serious stuff goin' on with the posts. Font sizes are changing randomly...text is stretched across the page...digicons are in a vey long line as if they're trying for more than one screen. Noe of the posts are lining up correctly. It's a real mess!

What browser are you using? I don't see any of that stuff. Or do you have an example thread?

Maybe he needs a cache purge.

Unfortunately there's not much I can do about the post.  Do you have another post that has a lot of color issues like the one above?  If so, try to edit the post (do a hard refresh on the edit post page: Ctrl + F5), then submit and see what happens.  I'm wondering if it's a caching issue on your end or if something else is causing the issue.  Nothing related to editing posts has been changed so I'm not sure why you are having problems.

Looks to me like the editor didn't load.  Do a hard refresh (Ctrl + F5) and see if it comes up.  If so, try to post and I bet it'll work.

I don't see any problems on that page.  You said you were using IE6, correct?  I'll have to go back and test it on there again.

I don't see any of these problems.  Do you have any links to specific posts with these problems?  What browser are you using?

I was all of a sudden getting bombarded with ads but a cookie cleaning took care of it in case anyone else sees the same.

:(   really? I was editing it on impulse, and i just tried to edit it on IE, but it just got even worse. How would I go about fixing a caching issue?

Edited out the MS Word junk comments, the thread should be happy in IE now.

Depends on your browser.  In IE go to Tools, Settings, then click to Delete Temporary Internet Files (where this is located may be different depending on which version you're using).  In Firefox click on Tools then Clear Private Data.  Check the boxes for Cache and Offline Website Data then close the browser and restart.  See if that does anything to help.

If not, I'd reccommend doing this: take the text for that post, post it into notepad, then edit the post, delete what's in the editor and paste the text into it from notepad.  This starts you back to a clean slate.  Then try re-applying the colors, positioning, and font changes to see if you can get it back to the way it was.  I know this may be some work, and I apologize.  But there's not much more we can do.

At the footer where it says:

© 2003-2007 Ironclad Games Corporation Vancouver, BC. All rights reserved.
© 2006-2008 Stardock Entertainment

The first line is breaking in two lines, making what should be the second line become the third.

This causes text to overflow outside the gray box where it should be. Like this:

reserved.

Small cosmetic bug, but still...

This happens on Firefox 3.0 for Mac OS X.

I'm using Firefox 3.0 on Windows and don't see that issue.  Unfortunately I don't have a Mac to test with so I cannot fix this bug, but even if I did we don't officially support Macs.  We are primarily a Windows-based company.

Positive note: don't know if you changed anything at all, or that it's just plane luck, but average page loading times went down from 4-7 sec to 2-3 sec.

That was the point of this update :)  We wanted to decrease page load times, increase performance, and decrease strain on the server.  The backend code changes, coinciding with a greater use of caching and compression, has really helped to increase performance of the forums.  We will continue working on more performance improvements in the coming weeks.

Has anyone else tried to change their avatar since the wierdness started? It shows up on the upload avatar page, and on my profile, but not when I post.
