Why no visible ranking?

During beta (or at anytime), did the devs or designers talk about why there is no visible ranking for online players and then matching players up via a similar system to BattleNet or others?

Note:  I'm not saying they don't use the data to match us up per se but none of it is visible in the game iteself.

It's not like they don't have all the data to do so (albeit right now the stats are totally street rat crazy messed up)...

It was discussed but GPG was not able to implement prior to release.  Since Stardock was able to develop an overlay, it plans to add it in itself.

Ahhh ok.  Cool.  It seems so critical and to me, common sense.  But if the reason is not enough time (I would have assumed this was a cornerstone design issue for online play), I hope they find time soon.
