How did he damage me?

I built a tank ship with 400+ shields to block for my fleet while taking on the DreadLords.  That is working very well.  But even with my sheilds higher than the DreadLords fleet attack value my tank can still take damage sometimes.  How is that?  Shouldn't my shields being higher make me immune to them.

Are you sure they aren't using another type of weapon as a secondary attack, like mass drivers or missiles?  Pardon me if you already know this, but unfortunately shields in GC2 aren't traditional sci-fi force fields, they only protect you against beam attacks.

I've also taken some damage on ships that should be immune to the weapon type they were getting hit with.  Not a lot, but it does happen.

They are using only beams.  It wasn't alot of damage just 10hp I think.  So, you have seen this.  Is it a bug?  Is there a combat log somewhere that shows how much they actually hit with before your defense negate it?

If memory serves me about combat, the attack and defense values are the max you can do.  The damage you do/can withstand that round is randomly determined from 0-100% (MIN increasable from the Luck ability).

You must have rolled low a few times and him high...

That would explain it.  I didn't know or forgot defenses rolled.  I knew attack rolled.
