Some perspective for the impatient

So I walk into my local EB this afternoon to check on my Demigod preorder. When I was last in several weeks ago they were unable to confirm the status of incoming collectors editions but I threw down my money and pre ordered anyway. I preordered because at the time Demigod had just been released Stateside, it was getting hammered in reviews.

I wanted to show my support for Frogboy, the teams at Stardock and GPG as well as quality made for PC gaming. I doubted it would count for much but seeing as buying the game online would take up nearly my entire monthly download cap there was really no other way to show it.

So I preordered a copy of Demigod that was to be released in Australia on May 7th. I specified I wanted a collectors edition but they had no information on how many collectors edition versions they would be getting in.

I next turned my sights to my PC. I'd long planned on purchasing a second GTX 260 to run in SLI and I finally had a PC title coming out that was worthy. I ordered that along with a brand new router to avoid old router issues. Much cash but worth it for Demigod.

I've hung around the forums and on irc as though refreshing threads and picking through the log would somehow bring May 7th closer. I wrote about being patient as those blessed with the rapture of being able to play vs the AI complained about the multiplayer connectivity.

Patches were released and the complaints grew increasingly petty. At least you guys can play! I've gone totally Demigod crazy. I want to play now! May 7th fast approaches!

So today I waltz into EB to see if they knew if they were getting some CE and to make sure I was on the list. They tell me they don't think they will be getting any CE in at all and that the release date is now May 21st.

"Cool. No Worries. Thanks guys..." I cheerfully say as I wander back outside. Then it really hits me... No CE... and May 21st!??!

Its all good. The sales peons are from the new generation that couldnt tell Dune 2 from a Gold Box AD&D title if their lives depended on it. They just don't care about Demigod and somehow the monitor that does their job for them had out of date data... its all good....

Nope. EB Australian website now says May 21st release.

Aaaaargh!

All I can say is: before anyone else complains about a minor issue as though Frogboy has personally visited your home and smeared jam all over the windows - Think of me! And those to whom the thought of playing the AI you have long grown bored of playing against is a fantastic fevered dream.

The next person who explodes in an expletive punctuated tirade peppered with flat wrong assertions with one or more of the following:

Stardock and GPG
The sexual orientation of employees or CEO's of the above companies
Speculation of the promiscuity of anyones mother
How to code P2P Networks
The inner workings of a Blizzard game and...
Why nobody but Blizzard should bother to make games

Runs the serious risk of having their spleen ruptured by my fury hurtling through the ether and rending that organ with savage twists of my mental fists. These outbursts are not justified because Demigod does not fellate you from the moment you put the DVD in the tray. There is no reason to castigate those who made it or any innocent bystanders in the channel when Frogboy and the team are working hard to bring multiplayer functionality up to the same level of quality as the game.

Have some perspective.

Have some perspective.? well we dont live in australia "thank god" so we can play the game now. And for those of us that actaully buy our games. Your saying its ok to blow 40 bucks on something that doesn't work right?? If that's ok in your book i highly doubt you'll be ripping anyone's spleen from anywhere. In fact im sure the mere sight of blood would proabaly make you faint. Drink some tea and relax, your australian!

Having demi-god already bought but my computer was being upgraded is probably the same feeling. It was so worth it though.

Yes. I'm saying its ok to pay upfront for a serial key and entering into the contract with Stardock for providing me with a service. I first heard of Demigod while playing GalCiv 2 - a game which Stardock has supported for many many years, providing updates and content - all of which I paid for upfront when I bought the serial key for GalCiv 2.

The fact that there have been some teething issues in the first few weeks of release does not invalidate the years of service that is purchased when you buy the game. It does not invalidate the fact that behind the multiplayer issues Demigod is a great game. It does not invalidate the respect and customer loyalty I have for this company after my experience with GalCiv 2.

To suggest that the current teething issues will not be dealt with is complete and total nonsense if you have any idea of the level of support Stardock has for its products.

The assertion that paying Stardock for Demigod is somehow a ripoff only holds water if you do not understand how Stardock operates. I've paid just as much for products by other companies that worked flawlessly from release then sat on the shelf unused a few months later as balance issues emerged and the company stopped supporting the game and moved on to the next title.

Isn't that more of a rip off? Relatively speaking the money I spend of a Stardock product is peanuts if you add it up on a month by month basis.

Thats the beauty of inflicting internal injuries over great distances. Theres no blood in either instance.

Tea is an English stereotype not an Australian one.

i know im sorry i make the generalization that all australians are brits. And fyi every austrailian i've ever met, or spoken to drank tea, so try a cup!

And no its not ok to pay 40 dollars to enter into a contract. Because there is not contract lolz, there's no written agreement. And what about the games that work on day 1, and do great, and get dropped exactly your proving my own point for me.

But anyhoo's this games been up 2 weeks, buncha updates, still a ton of problems. I spent 30 bucks on shadowrun a couple years back, great game, worked out the gate, had a strong playerbase. Got picked up by multiple leagues. And the dev studio died out and canceled support. It happens, To great games!, that work on day 1. And you speak of Stardock like this game's been out for months. It's been 2 weeks, i've seen 4 updates, and the games worse now than it was. Sorry but i have no faith. And on a note gas powered games is the developer, stardock is the publisher. Do you know what kind of contract stardock has with GPG? do you know how long there signed off on to provide this game with support? i'd be interested to find out before i go screaming lifetime updates/support.

Everygame releases with bug/glitches etc... But were in 2009, and deer hunter tournament has a more stable mp system than this game, its a dollar store game.

Plus, Stardock has been releasing updates for much older games as well.Don't remember dates and stuff off the top of my head at the moment.

Well you are right in the sense that Stardock does not really have any binding contract to provide support for years. There is an unwritten contract however and its called having some principles. I realise this can be a completely alien concept for a company to have these days but there it is all the same.

No I don't speak of Stardock like this game has been out for months. I speak of Stardock as a company that has been around for years. GPG and Stardock developed Demigod together. As Kitkun mentioned there is an agreement between GPG and Stardock to provide free content and updates for at least one year - including some new Demigods as content patches.

And that comes back to my point about the money you put down when you purchase the game buys that kind of support. After a year the direction further support takes will be heavily influenced by the financial success of Demigod. An expansion may or may not happen based on how well it does so if you like Demigod the best way to show your support is to pay for it.

In my mind theres no question at all that Demigod will be supported for years. I can't point to any particular post right now but I'm certain Frogboy has said words to that effect. At this point its merely a question of degree based on finacial success.
