Another Rant

I'm starting to side with the folks that are concerned about GalCiv cheating. Now, I don't think it cheats outright, but there are many things that don't ring true during game play. Why do other races have monster level populations early, even though I took the highest level Pop Growth, and second best Planet Quality? I can't even hope to keep up. If I don't grab enough worlds right at the start...I lose. If I grab too many worlds...I lose. If I don't build ships by the dozens, every race wants to destroy me...and I lose. If I try to stand up for myself and fight back, the other races join the war because I'm hurting their trade...again, I lose. By the time I can even build freighters one or more of the other races is already at war with me, and vaporizes my trade routes, leading to economic collapse...you guessed it, I lose.
I'm finally playing at normal and can't see any need for a higher level of "AI", or should I say Artifical Malevolence. It seems that every race (even if I start them with a Good alignment) is hell bent on military conquest. There isn't even a chance for the other victory conditions. No matter what I do, after about 48 months of game-time, the other races have these glowing auras of population, while most of my systems are pathetic embers waiting to be snuffed out.
I can find no strategy for this strategy game, short of get lucky and hold all the good planets right at the start of the game. Fail to do this, and you lose.
I was a big Spaceward Ho! fan, and I had such high hopes for this game. But I'd like to think I could at least win one out of six games on Normal. So far I'm zero for twenty-two, and ready to shelve the game.
