Should there be a resign option?

a.k.a. bots in online games sucks

Could this be a good resolution of  two common gripes:  leavers and bots (in online games)?

Given one of these scenarios:

  • You're in a 2v2 and paired with a helpless bot
  • You're paired with a leaver who jumps ship as soon as you're even marginally behind the curve (cowards!)
  • You are just totally outclassed and way behind the curve, but its going to take another 30 minutes for them to grind you down...
  • [add yours here]

What I think the winning want in these situations:

  1. maximum experience and favor and the win.
  2. an interesting oponent instead of a trivial grind.
  3. to crush a human, not a bot.
  4. if they cant have 2 or 3, then to take what xp and favor (and the win) and move on.

What I think the losing want.

  1. a valiant fight to the death with a human compatriot.
  2. if they cant have 1, then a valiant last stand at a disadvantage (they,re losing anyway.)
  3. a chance to practice surviving at a disadvantage  against human opponents. (see 2)
  4. if they don't care about 1-3, then just want to take the loss and move on.

What they both want:

  1. to have their rankings reflect play with humans, not AI (yes, i know, the horse is dead.)

All these reasons center around the presence of bots, which are usually the result of leavers. The option to respectfully resign with dignity and a 'gg' is surely better that the leaving and the bots and the tedium...  Sure, the winners will lose out on some favor, but so will the losers.  I think people would rather take less (as winners) in the short run, to increase the overall enjoyability (?) of their mp experience

It's a good idea. Perhaps this thread should be in the 'Ideas' forum instead of general forum.

The problem is that that favor doesn't depend on length of the game, only the stats on when it ends, however it ends. Let's say one player on the team buys 5 citadel upgrades, and nobody else does. If that game goes to the bitter end, he's going to get the favor for upgrades. If the losing team forfeit after he bought 3 upgrades, he'd still get the favor for upgrades.

And then the system would also need to be robust enough to discount obviously faked/padded games (1v1, one guy kills another once, the guy killed forfeits and the "winner" racks up favor for winning, most kills, fewest deaths, yadda yadda).

It is a good idea, there just has to be some more control around it to prevent abuse and score padding. Mostly around the out-of-game ladder stats collection.

I think there are a few options for the players left in the game:

  1. Give the team of the leaver a vote to decide whether or not they wish to resign the match. This would result in no loss/disconnect for the team, but the other team would recieve a win. No favor is awarded to the resigning team.
  2. Give both teams an option to call it a draw. Playing ranked vs AI allows for an an easy rank-up/win but it is awfully boring for both sides. Both sides recieve 75 favor for the match.
  3. End the match (no vote), call it a draw. Both sides recieve 75 favor for the match.

I do not wish to be punished for my allies (that I have not chosen myself) choice to leave or their poor connection. I don't particularly care about punishing the leaver, I just don't want to be punished. It's boring to fight vs AI or vs uneven teams. I just want to end the match, and find a decent one to work with.

I really like how in Guild Wars it requires the whole team to resign and it'll forfit.

You type /resign and it says "____ has resigned'.  If everyone on the team does that, it ends and they get a lose.
It's a good way to respectfully give up, without ditching your team(since after you /resign you're still playing, it doesnt' end until everyone on a team does it), and not having matches drag on.

I like the idea of a draw vote too.

I agree. They had it in Savage and it worked well.

End of RainFall2112's quote

Yep and get a disconnect

There's no disconnect stat in this?  Also, getting a disconnect for leaving the game through the game's menus is retarded...

Yes, a resign option would be great.  Just played a match where one person on the other team left, then the tide turned (in our favor) and the rest of the team left as well.  Rather than having to play out the rest of the match against AI, would have been nice if they could have just resigned.

Or when a team turn to all AIs, just end it in victory for the other team.
