Ship routes

I'm playing a 4 player, 32 planet FFA vs. AI.

I had a trade alliance with one of them for a short while, but I noticed my ships chose to take paths through hostile gravity wells to get to the other trade alliance rather than take an extra hop through my systems to get there safely.

Is there a way to set a route or a route preference to go through friendly territory?

It makes sense that an extra hope would be worth getting the cargo there safely.

Nope :( Was the hostile well scouted? I remember a long time ago people complained about trade ships going through pirate bases so IC did some tweaking, but I don't know if it was supposed to apply to all scouted hostile wells or just pirates.

Ya, like in most games route find algorthims will always find the path of least jumps

yeah, I did sout it, yet they went through anyway.

Path of least hops...

This applies to more than just trade ships I've noticed; fleets themselves and rally points force the onboard AIs of ships to take the "path of least hops."  Quite annoying when you have multiple fronts and precise strategy is a must.  I wonder how difficult it would be to set up a simple waypoint system in a future patch with which you could pre-plan the routes of both military and civilian ships? :maybe:

At least with waypoints you have a degree of control to prevent that from happening.  If a trade ship ventures into a bad gravity well, there's nothing you can do about it.  It doesn't happen very often (at least as far as I've noticed), so I think it has more to do with colonies being created and destroyed and this messes up the trade ship route-finding algorithm.

I've noticed what you guys are talking about as well.  I just had something odd happen myself. I had a fleet split and go into two separate gravity wells to get to another one two jumps away.  All I did was to click once on the gravity well I wanted them to end up in, and they split!

I'm not sure why that happened.  Could it be because one route was quicker for some of the ships, and for the ships on the other side of the fleet formation the second route was shorter?  Why didn't the fact that it was a fleet keep them all together for the jump?

It's not a huge deal to me, I'm just a little confused.
