Game Time, Bases, stuff

Im wondering, can some ppl give some feedback here, how long would it take you to complete a small random map(20 planets?) scenario vs. 1 hard AI. Because the other day I played a scenario just like that and it took me 6hours and 22 minutes to complete (and thats a good measure of how long games take for me) is that little rediculuos? If so could the way I'm playing be part of it....

Every game I've played in SoSE so far regardless of map size and whether I was completely thinking or not my strategy has been to basically build up 2 massive fleets- 1 carrier fleet with 25+carriers(criuser) 3-4 Sova's; Fleet 2- Basically evrything esle- cap ships, LRF's, heavy criusers- both fleets with healthy amount of support criusers. I dont really do much offense until then. (both fleets travel together) Could this gameplay Im doing be reason y i take so long, timewise would it be ineffeicient-agian id like to know how long other ppl would take on some map.

-Now some other stuff

It sorta seems to me that the starbases are bit overhyped- yes they are big and powerful and fully upgraded self destruct obliterates anything standing its way however I thought they would be more powewrful while they still in one piece. Because I found you dont need a very large fleet to take down a starbase and dont even need any seige nukes to do so. More heavily armored bases are somewhat an exception. I do realize my above strategy completly overwhelms a star base no matter how strong/ just is that they take quite a beating from just small strike forces.

Which brings me to my next piont- any siege criuser I think is completly useless/ slow, long reload, wasted supply space, unversitle, more of a burden - Maybe remove this ship from game replace with something esle?

-What are mods? I know theres a whole section in the forums about them but I really dont know what they are exactly/ and if im on multiplayer could I use them with ppl who may not have same mod?

:)  My games tend to be long too, but i usually only get to play about an hour a day, so my games last for about a week on average, sometimes two weeks if im in a larger map, or if things get more complicated than i thought in smaller ones.

As for Starbases, i dont know what to say, i have lost SB's too, not that i cared for that too much, and i thought of tweaking the buffs for the hull and shields to make it stronger, but haven't done that yet. Though, if i lose them consistently i might do that, just to even it out a bit. But i have to be careful of that, so i dont make it too strong, a ship that can take everything isnt any fun, haha, but i suppose you could make it take a whole large fleet to take it down. And perhaps extend the range and tweak the damage down so it doesnt kill "Everything" that comes across it. Maybe just most.  And as too fighters/bombers?  Hmmmm... that is a sticky one, alot of ppl like that strategy and the strikecraft can in fact take out a lot, and they replace fairly quickly and usually at no cost for the carriers and caps that have them.

Only thing i can think of course would be to give the SB's and maybe the Capitals as well, anti-fighter guns, so that even spammed their easier to counter. Extra hull points and or shields on the caps might make them less susceptible as well. Which would mean the strikecraft spammers would have to try something else. As for Single Player games, it might be interesting to see how the AI counters. I haven't tried anything like this yet, so i have no idea. Sometimes, things like this work and make it interesting, sometimes, they botch up the balance and i wind up going back to normal.  :)
