Pirates need love too

Pirates need love too

i like the idea of pirates but would like to be able to use them with more options instead of just on or off. i would like to be able to adjust the amount of time between pirate attacks, and be able to adjust the severity of the attacks. beyond using them as mercenaries i would like to see them act on their own accord, that is attacking trade ships and other targets of opportunity. i think there are mods to do some of this but it seems like an easy addition into the options of the game.

any thoughts?

Quoting Annatar11, reply 25

Crikey...how hard have you actually searched to do this?
The other possibility is that he's playing 1.0, before that Options button and the pirate toggle was added.
End of Annatar11's quote

I think that's what's going on here, because I don't see any of the buttons he's talking about.  Time to update I guess.

Configurable pirates would be interesting.  I wouldn't mind if they could have similar AI personalities to exisiting AI choices (easy, medium, hard, unfair) and whether they are tactical vs aggressive.

Dead Man's Chest- corsairs were notorious for buried loot, yet all you get for their base is a sinister-looking slightly upgraded asteroid.

'If you do not send them the amount'- another popular activity was to take captives for ransom.  If they steal a scientist it might impact research, and industrialist mining, a merchant trade, a celebrity culture....  They were also slave traders, perhaps population could be purchased?

Pirates may have been amoral, but they were also unforgiving, sentimental creatures who mixed gunpowder with their rum, and exacted reprisals for their betrayed fellows.  If you destroy pirate ships their price should rise (negative multiplier on bounty), likewise if their ships are destroyed in your service.

They were daring sailors, so their base might have a nearby wormhole, and their ships might be made faster.  Unless they were taken unawares, when they might be drunk...

Pirates were smugglers, perhaps they could be attracted by tariffs on trade if these become a part of the new system of faction relations.  They took captured ships as prizes as well, though many were refitted for piracy.

I like your ideas "DesConnor" especialy the 1 about them capturing people for ransom. Perhaps in addition they could extract valuble info out of them also, stratigic or scientific or military. They could put this info on the black market and sell to the highest bidder. Maybee you would have to buy info that they obtained off you back off them to prevent enemy factions getting hold of it.

I agree, it is kinda sad to find the pirates to be suicidal but it is annoying for me just having to kill them every 12 minutes
