controlling game speed in SP

Game speed was normal early game (SP) but later ramped up to a point where is was ridicuously fast. I cannot seem to find anything relating to a game speed control in Options/Settings. Any reason why game speed would speed up mid to late SP game and is there anyway to control it??? Thanks.

The plus and minus keys change how fast the game does everything.
