How do you update it, since you can only update through Impulse?

And if you updated a fresh install you would be using version 2, not 1.96.

Maybe your system is at fault more than GalCiv2 or Impulse.

He used SDC-TA is up to 1.96 on SDC.

I only recall seeing this error once, and it wasn't during saving.

Free i'm running on the same system, v1.96. I never came up with a message like that during a save but i could help with this matter.

have you done any recent modding or any updating? Because that message is to do with the application file/the hard coding. it's not complete or it's been corrupted by something. the only thing that i can think of would be to reinstall the entire file. delete all recent updates and install the disc copy of the game.

if a moderator or someone with more experience in this matter wishes to speak up and go againest my hypothesis then i encourage you to do so.

I'm not 100% sure but I seem to remember seeing a similar error upon saving a game when using extreme settings (largest map, largest amount of planets) after a long time playing and alt-tabbing to windows durring the game session

My analysis of it was that somehow there was not enough memory available to galciv2 application (since by default it's limited to a maximum of 2GB)

depending on your hardware/software, it may be possible to increase the amount of memory available to galciv2 by altering it's executable (it's just a flag though...), in that case you might want to check out this thread of mine : https://forums.galciv2.com/328255

Not what you want to hear, but... upgrade to 2.02. A lot of bugs (including memory errors) were fixed in the 2.0 release.

I watch TM in a second monitor and a while back on 1.96 I experienced something in this realm. The game shot from around 750MB of usage up to 2.2GB in a couple of minutes for seemingly no reason and proceeded to crash. After the 2.0 update though I have not experienced it anymore.

It sounds like your best bet is to work on getting your Impulse problem straightened out, then you will be able to tackle TA knowing that an outdated version is not the problem.

I can't i CAN'T I FRICAN CAN'T DO IT!  for one its to big for my Dile-up and two it dose not show on Impulse... STARDOCK make a stand off download plaese.

Then get Impulse working, and do the usual 'offline update' method of downloading the archive at a different computer, putting it on a USB stick and then updating from that archive at your normal computer.

The update from 1.96 to 2.0 was like...9MB.  That's half an hour at 56k.  (Hell, 25 minutes.)  I doubt the update to 2.02 is -that- much larger.

Impulse not showing it is another problem entirely.

One that is easily fixed, as the old SDC install wrote the registry entries not where Impulse is looking for them. There where quite a lot threads about that back when Impulse started, so finding that information shouldn't be too hard.

that's why I suggested patching the executable to be able to address more than 2GB of total memory, which really works fine here with 1.96 (did not try out impulse mainly because I'm still in the middle of a game). Though it's a bit of work

either way one will have to go with impulse one day or another since stardock ain't going to release standalone patches at all, it's their only "light DRM" after all ... and I foresee a bunch of games going the impulse route in the future (like for example Supreme Commander which even if it's not to everyone taste, is quite among the "rather good" games)
