Demigod, A New Genre

Demigod, A New Genre

In a fromer post I complained about how Demigod is called an RTS when it clearly isnt. But it also isnt an RPG.

So at the time I had an idea. Why don't we come up with a name for a new genre, one that Demigod stands as the father/mother of. This way, not only does Demigod get a label  that will fit it, it will catch the eyes of many hard core gamers who'll be intrested in the prospects of a whole new type of game. This also means we and the creators are not held back by the previous label.

And so I ask, why do we let them be held back, we keep saying, hey make the generrals more RTSy and make the Assissans this or that, but what we could do if Demigod is recognized as a new genre is endless. We don't need a game with the same formula as all the others that are coming out, what we need is a genre that Demigod can sit in, one where the generals can act completely diffrent from the basic ideas of an RTS, among other things.

Now the real question (if you agree with me) is what do we call this new genre, a name that really defines it. So I'll start and I want to see if anyone has any ideas for a name.

My name idea is that the genre should be called a HBSG, or a Hero Based Strategy Game.

This is a Strategy game in real time, but as it was already said, calling DG a RTS could be misinterpreted.
This is not a RTT, DG is not about "operational warfare and military tactics"

Before finding a name, we have to find the definition of DG.
This is a Strategy game.
DG is fast paced, we can start playing really fast.
We have a hero unit.

No idea for the name. But videogames magazine and web site will not create a new section for Demigod. DG will always be in the strategy section, dominated by RTS genre.
For exemple I play a lot of RTT game (all massive entertainment games, sudden strike 1&2, ...) I always use the term RTS.

The problem is not about finding a new name for DG, it's about finding a definition that we can use to explain what are the rules in DG, and why it's fun.

I don't want to be overly pessimistic, as this is still beta, but unless some things about this game change relatively dramatically, I'm starting to fear that it will in the Half-Baked, Undevivered Promises (HBUP) genre.  (Edit: I'm saying this solely because the generals do not allow for an RTS style of play at all and for no other outstanding issue with the latest beta release.)

Honestly, this game reminds me alot of the play style of Dungeon Keeper 2, that was referred to as a RTS mainly because there were so many options in the game and things to do. Its actually one of my favorite games. Too bad we can't slap our minions around to make them fight harder.  Seriously, DK2 would be a good reference game to gather fun ideas to apply to this one.

Also, great work so far Stardock!

Some ideas for genre titles I had were:

  • TPS - Third Person Strategy

  • TPPS - Third Person Plural Strategy

  • SSORPS - Small Sized Online Role Playing Strategy

  • DEMIGOD - Developer Enhanced Multiplayer Inventive Game of Death

  • WCIF - Who Cares, Its Fun

It does sadden me though. Demigod is NOT an RTS, no matter how much is changed, it can't be. But it's fun as hell. The thing is, people will look over it in the RTS catagory. I would really love Stardock and GPG try to make Demigod a new catagory, because while it does include things from other games, it's not them. While it's flags are more llike a FPS's and it's heroes are more like an RPG game, and the objectives are more like an RTS, it's none of those. But it's a great game, it does what it needs to to be fun, it isn't overcomplicated, it isn't big, it's a quick game you can pick up when you just want to play with a friend. This is why I would really like to see Demigod at least try to be a new genre, even if many don't except it, because I know many will except a new genre, I know I will, and this could lead to a whole new kind of game, an in between game, a game that you can go back to a thousand times and it will be fun everytime, one with huge replability, and one thats just a great, well built, game. I already think DG is most of the way there, they really just have to truely define the generals, among a few minor things.

P.S. I love the name: Hero-Based Arena-Located Real Time Role-Playing Tactical Strategy Game (HBALRTRPTSG). Thats great, although impractical.
