I download the mods using the links in their posts then i extract them to the folder i was told to c:users:username:appdata:local:stardockgames:sinsofasolarempire:mods                                                                 then i go to the game and try to use the mod and it freezes, did i do something wrong or is it just taking a long time to load?

Takes a while to load, just let it be frozen for a few seconds.

Way to long...

Classic problem is a version conflict... be sure to have the right version of sins for each mod... some very old mod work with sins 1.0, some of them use sins 1.05, some use sins 1.12...

Second usual problem is ram related... some mod add a lot of material to the original game... if you have the minimal  ram setting for sins, it don't mean that you will be able to run every mods...

For check : once you start the game, after the intro video, when you are at the first menu, take a look at the lower right conner... you will see something like v1.05 or v1.12 or ... it is your version number...

For change of version, if you are at the 1.05 or highter version, you can try the impulse engine ( if it work )... of you can install it again... Myself, i have no problem since i use linux... several version with several config file is not a problem for me...
