Rookie needs help

How to get started making skin

Ok, I've been reading tutorials on skinning, in which i have the concept. But i dont know how to use my graphics editor. I have GIMP, is there a tut. that can explain like how to make a start button on gimp or any other graphics editor.

I really would like to learn how to make skins, hope someone can HELP ME PLEASE THANK YOU
