Mangini Fired

-

I'm not surprised Eric Mangini was fired. This man squandered a playoff appearance that seemed almost inevitable. Such a mistake should carry a consequence. Many armchair Quarterbacks are blaming Brett Favre for the meltdown, but those folks are borderline delusional. Yes, its true that Favre was intercepted a lot, but rewind to last season when Chad Pennington was intercepted much in the same way. Its nothing short of a miracle that Favre took the Jets to 8-3 with such miserable pass protection. When any quarterback has to deal with a pocket that consistently collapses, or when blitzers are coming at them clean off the line, they tend to make big mistakes and they try to force things. Lots of Jets fans want to see Favre go, but I don't agree with that. Some guys think that bringing in a new QB like Matt Cassel would fix everything, but thats also hysterical. If anything, we could use the guys who protect Cassel and put them around Favre. Brett Favre would be deadly with the pass protection that Matt Cassel gets. That guy has all day to throw the ball. With Cassels protection, even Ryan Leaf could throw for 400.

Its kind of sad to see Mangini go because he did make some good progress in building the team. Last season, even Richard Simmons could have rushed for a hundred against the Jets while rocking out to "sweating to the oldies." At least thats been shored up a bit, but Mangini had to be held accountable for allowing the Jets to be eliminated from the playoffs by 3 of the leagues worst teams. It was Manginis responsibility to make adjustments in game plans and to rotate players if they weren't performing correctly, and that includes Favre. If Favre's arm was banged up during the Titans game, then Mangini should have rested him for a game.

The Jets owners are correct, this all falls on Manginis shoulders. The poor pass defense, the failure to rotate players and draw up game plans that would work. Its also obvious that Mangini underestimated threats. How else do you explain his willingness to allow Chad Pennington to go to a division rival, Miami. While the Jets weren't actually eliminated by Miami, they now pose a huge threat. "Mangenius" must have thought that Pennington was washed up and posed no threat, and thats just a microcosm of how 3 crappy teams ended up getting the better of him.

Just because a team is playing poorly doesn't mean that you can take the day off and not prepare a solid plan against them. Take the 49rs for instance, sure they stink, but if you don't plan a way to stop players like Isaac Bruce, a superbowl Champion, they will beat you to death with him. So sayonara Eric. I would like to see Parcell's come back to the Jets, but he has a nasty habit of almost getting a team to the big game and then quitting, Id rather have mean old Bill Cowher out there with his spittle cup, or Mike Holmgren would be good too.

I'm not surprised Mangini got fired either. I was surprised he didn't get fired last year. But the reason for the Jets collapse isn't his alone. Brett Favre deserves a big part of it, too.

It was no miracle. Jets had a relatively easy schedule plus the Jets spent like crazy on the off season shoring up their lines. No matter who was QBing the Jets this year they would have improved.

The reason many people are blaming Favre right now is his decision making. Did you see any of those games last 4 games? Favre was totally horrible. Terrible throws reminiscing of a rookie instead of a first ballot Hall of Famer.

First of all, the Jets gave up less sacks than the Patriots. The Jets were 14th in the league in sacks allowed while the Patriots were 28th. So that argument goes right out the window.  The Patriots still finished 11-5. No way do they finish that high with Favre quarterbacking them. Just so you know the Steelers were 29th in sacks allowed and they finished 12-4. It wasn't the sacks they made Favre suck.

Now this where Mangini comes in. He was coaching not to lose instead of coaching to win. Many times in their losses Thomas Jones rarely got carries in the 4th quarters. If anybody knows anything about Thomas Jones is that he gets stronger as the game goes on. He rarely saw the ball in the 2nd half against Seattle and San Fran.

Another thing where Mangini totally messed up was NOT changing his whole offensive philosophy when they acquired Brett Favre. He played 15 years in Green Bay's version of a west-coast offense and Mangini did nothing to try to implement any of those plays in the Jets offense. Plays that Favre can run in his sleep.

It's so hard for a new QB to come to a team and run a whole offense that his new team is used to running. Especially if that QB has been running a whole different offense for years. It's almost better to just change the offense to the QB instead of the QB changing for the team. Look at Matt Cassell. Why do you think he played as good as he did this year? It's because he has practiced with the team for a few years now. He totally understands the whole philosophy of the Patriots offense, which is why when Brady went down for the year they didn't panic and go looking for a new QB. They knew it was better to have a no-name QB who understood then a big name QB who would have to learn.

Yes, the Jets owners were correct in getting rid of Mangini. But the ONLY reason they are NOT getting rid of Favre is because they are moving in a new stadium next year. I really hope Favre retires, though.

The Jets didn't allow Pennington to go to Miami. Pennington was done in NY. Did you really want the Jets to play him 6 million to hold a clipboard? They need his cap space to complete the Favre deal anyways.

Parcells shouldn't go there. He's perfectly fine where he's at right now (well unless Dolphins change owners like they might). Holmgrem should really sit out a year and get rejuvenated and I sure hope Cowher doesn't go there. I like Cowher and I would hate for him to go there.

Maybe the Jets should fine the best candidate possible even if he's not a big name. Look at the Atlanta, Baltimore and Miami. They all hired no-name but very qualified coordinators as their head coaches and they all made the playoffs. Maybe the Jets are next.

I'm hoping Favre takes another run with the Jets... remember, he went into this completly new system with no training camp.

Statistics can be misleading... Cassel had much more time to throw the ball everytime I watched him. At certain pooints, even the thinker statue could have thrown for 400. The Pats give good protection regardless of what the stats might say.

Don't forget the record Jersey sales :)

I sure hope Cowher doesn't go there. I like Cowher and I would hate for him to go there.

No it won't be Cowher, he "politely" pulled his name from the list of candidates. It looks like he wanted to bring in all his own people and have more control over things.

I am just happy to see Shanahan gone.  Now to wait a week to see the same fate for Norv Turner.  Those 2 are the worst ones around (or were).

Don't be hating on Shanahan just because Al Davis made the mistake of getting rid of him. It came back to haunt him twice a year since. :)

I still surprised Turner is still a head coach. A brilliant coordinator but a lousy head coach.

BTW .. Your team will never be good again until Al Davis dies or gives up control. They are slowly becoming the Lions of the west.

Hey Doc, even Rose knows how bad the Raiders management has been. ;)

Not hadly this year.  one of the 3 good games the Raiders played was against him.  And they won.  Best to keep up with the times.

Shanahan still sucks.  He leeched off of the whiner when he was not good enough to do anything on his own.  He did get a ring in spite of his coaching.

And if I was going to be upset about every one that Davis let go, I would be upset about half the country.

Favre will retire.. then who will the Jet fans blame?

I said it came back to haunt Al Davis twice a year and I stand by that. I never said they beat the Raiders twice a year. His record against the Raiders was 21-7.  Do you really believe I think Shanahan went unbeaten in 14 straight years against the Raiders? Come on, Doc.

He's not a great coach but he's a good coach. Not too many are "great" coaches. Look at Parcells he couldn't win a playoff game with Dallas. BTW Shanahan just didn't get a ring he got TWO rings. Should I tell you to "keep up with the times". ;)

But I'm not talking about half the country. You know Davis made a mistake when he let Shanahan go. Next thing you're going to tell me that letting Chuckie go was a good move, too. What is the Raiders record since Gruden left? 35-77!  That's why "half the country" has been coaching them. If anyone needs to be told "Best to keep up with the times" is Al"Damn I miss the old AFL days" Davis.

Never said letting chuckie go was good. ANd I dont.  I admit the failings of my team, but I dont take blame for whiners and losers.  Shanahan was both, and not a good coach.  Good coaches do not carry grudges.

And yes, Davis has to get with it or get out.  I never said (in the last few years) otherwise.  I think firing Shell was a mistake, and firing Kiffin was a mistake.  Firing SHanahan and Turner were the good moves.

I think firing Shell was a mistake but I'm glad he did. Art is a good coach and a better man and I hated seeing him go through the things he had to in his 2nd coaching tenure there. Some of the coaches he was force to hire had no business being with any professional team.

As for Kiffin,I thought the team this year actually were competitive. I do think he's going to be a better college coach, though. Plus it's not going to hurt having his dad coaching the defense. ;)

I see the rumors are starting already. Shanahan to Dallas.

Norv Turner is a very good coordiantor but completely blows as a head coach.

Doc, if Shanahan sucks so bad why would you want him fired? Being a Raiders fan I would think you would want him to stay with Denver as long as possible.

Being a Steelers fan I hope the Browns would keep Romeo Crennel forever.

Being a Michigan fan I know I hated when Ohio State fired John Cooper.I wanted OSU to keep him. Damn, what's the Maize and Blue's record since OSU hired Jim Tressel?

John Cooper, why can't you still be coaching the Buckeyes? Now that's something I "wished" for. ;)

Poor Chad. It looks like "Jets Chad" showed up and imploded. His success this season with the Dolphins must have simply been the result of a soft schedule, but it wasn't totally his fault,  I was kind of suprised by Parcells calls, (yes Parcells), that guy on the sideline is just his sock puppet. Parcells virtually abandoned the ground game and allowed the Dolphins to become one dimensional. Thats a no-no against a defense like the Ravens.

When Kiffin was fired, the raiders were 1-3, but 2 of those losses were in the last minute.  That said a lot for Ryan, not Kiffin.  He will be a great college coach, and should he ever venture into the pros again, a great Pro Coach.  I was sorry to see that (but then AL Davis is senile and his actions defy logic).

As for Shell, what you fail to understand is that he is the consumate Raider.  He and Upshaw DEFINE the great Raider teams of the 70s.  He needed more time, but perhaps you are right.  Under Davis, that does not appear to be available.

First, let me set the record straight.  I am a Raider Fan first and foremost.  But I am also a football Fan.  Shanahan was bad for football!  He was not a good coach.  He fell into a dynasty that he managed to make a laughing stock of (sure Elway own 2 - and how many did he lose????).  HIs vindictiveness was unbecoming and detracted from the sport.  WHile I hate the deadskins, I have never hated George Allen.  He was the NFC's version of Al Davis, and I admire him.

I dont want to see the Raiders given a pass to victory.  I want them to WIN!  But win on the field against worthy opponents.  Not a bunch of whiners and losers, and that has been the Ponies for the last 20 years.  The Chargers, as vexing as the Broncos when it comes to the Raiders, have been a good team, and a worthy opponent (except for their head coach now).  But the Broncos have not been.  Now they have a chance to be.  This year just demonstrated the true nature of Shanahan.  The only reason it was not more apparent and he was not fired earlier was due to dumb luck getting the WHiner from the Colts.

I hope Mangini can turn things around in Cleveland. He's a good guy and I hope he does well over there. I'm wondering who the Jets will end up with. Giants Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo would probably be good... I hear Brian Billick is floating around out there, but I'm not all that enthusiastic about him. Even though Shanahan is probably the dirtiest coach in the league, I'd still like to see him on the Jets sideline smacking people in the mouth with the combo of Leon Washington and Thomas Jones.

It would also probably be good if we got the Ravens Rex Ryan. The more I think about it the more I like the sound of it. It would be great if we could get Ed Reed to come along with him :)
