Demigod performance / Benchmark

I'm trying to optimize Demigod and a few other games.  My sim speed during 1vs1 is around 4.  3v3 sim speed is 0 or 1.  I'm trying to figure out if overclocking will help.  I have P4 2.5Ghz, 1gb ram, Radeon X1650.

I used the 3Dmark06 benchmark program

Total Score: 1440 3DMarks
SM 2.0:  521
SM 3.0:  653
CPU:     544

I found out Demigod, like supreme commander, requires dual core or higher cpu.  Since it's mostly a similar engine, it's very cpu intensive.  I know it's only beta and nothing is final.  The system requirements they posted at the stardock store is exactly the same as supcom.

That processor is really old. You could also use more RAM. That card sounds like its plenty good, but I'm not too familiar with ATI cards.

I'd say overclocking would probably help, although with a CPU that old I don't know how much overclocking it could take.

Not a great deal I'm afraid. Your graphics card should just about cut it and you'll have enough RAM, but your CPU wil hold you back. It may be time to invest in an upgrade coe the january sales.

Well my motherboard only supports P4 (socket 478) so I won't be able to get the new dual cores LGA775.  Upgrading the cpu means upgrading the motherboard, which means upgrade everything.

I'm getting pretty low sim speeds as well (down to 2 or so on big games)

 

Athlon 6000+ X2 (oc'd to 3250 mhz)

6 gb ram

8800 gt 512mb

game is on a raptor 10k rpm HD

 

Running it maxed out at 1680x1050 with 4 aa and getting a nice 30 or so fps but the game speed slows down quite a bit.

Hazar, I am suprised with your rig you are getting a 2, must be custom settings with a ton of units and action.  Anyways, no worries.  If I recall correctly, sim speed of 1 or greater means you are running in real time.  When you hit <1 is where there are problems.

 

Also, everyone please realize that the beta is unoptimized and will likely run better in final release version. 

Blitz, I just built an off the hook good comp for my family and little sis for $600.  I realize that is still a lot of money, but you can really get some great stuff for bargain prices right now.  The price-performance ratio is just insane if you overclock.  $600 for a 4GHz core dou w/ 4GB DDR2 and a 4850 is just plain great.  Runs everything maxed.  Now if only my sister did only play Nancy Drew, Zoo Tycoon 2, and Guild Wars.  By the way do you have an aftermarket hsf currently?

If you want to know what really kills performance it's the shadows and anti-aliasing. Turn those down and you will probably find it runs best.

I suspect in competitive play, people will play with everything turned down to the minimum but not for performance reasons (try it and you'll see what I mean).

No no no. this is not true.  higher sim speed is faster. lower  sim speed is slower only if you hit -1 or less.

If you see a sim speed of +7 it mean you could speed up the game 7x (note that im not talking about FPS here but game execution)

IT was like that in supcom and it is still like that for demigod.

 

For proof, start a fresh game and look at the sim speed. On my 4 cores, im at +10 on start. and when the game evolve a bit, sim speed go down to  around 5.

I dont notice any slowdown(not FPS, gamplay speed) because it is still in the positive number.

If you could please correct your statement Frogboy or give me an explication if I missed something...

Also stating that having a simspeed of 1 is better than 2 is sooo wrong. Your too close to make the game slow for everyone in multiplayer because your close to the -1.

Test it by speeding up the game.

Says you're running at 5? Increase to 5 and notice how the speed changed each time. Go higher and you wont notice any increase.

Yes. Its exactly how the forge engine work. So a higher sim speed reported mean your computer ressource is not all used yet.

The more computer power you have, the highest the # of sim speed will be.

for the record; in SupCom it isn't linear. a max sim of +7 does not equate to 7x normal game speed.

 

it's an exponential scale, where +3 is 2x and -3 is 1/2x. the electrical engineers and any one familiar with how sound and waves work will immediately accept this.

for those who aren't so inclined, i'll save you a long boring lecture (see here if you're interested) but the current/max game speed approximately follows; '1.26^n', where 'n' is the current/max speed reported by the game (generally from ren_showNetworkStats).

so, a +7 gamespeed is actually about 5x normal game speed and -7 is 1/5x.

 

that said, this could have changed in DG, but i highly doubt it.

 

anyways, FrogBoy was either on too much of the Christmas Spirits, or he was confusing it with the render time (where lower does mean better).

I ran 3DMark06 benchmark on my system (P4 2.5Ghz, 1gb ram, Radeon X1650)

I guess I do have a slow computer.  I can only run this game on the lowest video setting.  The benchmark made me realize probably more ram or overclocking won't help much.  I ran the benchmark on a new intel dual core e2200 ($50 cpu) and the cpu score was 3x higher.  It would be nice to see 3dMark06 scores of other people.

Final thoughts is this game requires pretty much the same system requirements as SupCom.  my game slows down to -1 sim speed for a 3v3 1-player AI game.  I can do 1v1 with average 2 sim speed.

Slightly higher graphics card requirements, slightly lower CPU requirements. Apart from that, pretty much exactly like SupCom. It is the same engine after all.

Dont expect some miracle for the optimization of the game! Supreme commander beta was unoptimized and when Supreme Commander was out, it continued to be unoptimiezd. Demigod will be the same. I dont think so the game will be run smoother in the final release!!

Don't get me wrong here.  I expect the game to kill some bugs, lag and see an bit of improvement (1-2 FPS).  Also, SM2 will likely be implemented.  However, I am aware huge improvements won't happen.


P.S. Looking over my previos post, I clearly mis-stated how much it might change.
