Debt, Trade Goods & Tech Trading

1.  What is the impact of having a debt?  What is the maximum debt allowed?

2.  How do I check at a glance which of my colonies has a trade good or super project?  If my colony with a trade good is captured by the enemy, do I lose the trade good and what if I have already traded it away?

3.  Is there an easy way to check which civ has technology available for trading?

1.   There is no lower limit on debt allowed, but if you go below -500bc, you won't be able to produce or research anything.  100% of your economy goes toward the debt.  Also your morale will slowly go down the longer you continuously remain in debt.

2.  Don't know how you check at a glance.  I've always just gone through my planets and found it (using the Previous and Next arrows at the top of the planet screen).   If a planet of yours gets captured, you lose the trade good, but if you trade it away, you don't.  You get exclusive distribution rights over the trade good, meaning that you and only those of your choosing get it.

3.  You mean, "I'm looking for Stinger IV, and I want to know if anybody has it researched yet."?   I'm not aware you can do that.  However, you can just speak to everybody to find out, and that is almost as fast.

If you are concerned about being able to find a trade good or other special improvement, you can only really rename the planet so that you can recognize it. The is no search function. So you may even forget where you put your tech capital. I use the renaming on AI worlds that i spy on and find something i like. Those become my invasion priorities.

I agree that it would be good to be able to find all one-of-a-kind improvements either galaxy wide or from within your own empire but we can't. So start clicking away...

the trade screen will show you what techs are available and the report screen will show you what techs you have in common with an AI. But as tetlytea said, there is no search function to list all AI's that have what you may be looking for. Sometimes I have to go to each AI to see which weapons and defenses they are developing.

If you are a keyboard person, pressing Z (previous) or X (next) with a planet window open can help you move quickly through all your colonies no matter where you left your mouse pointer.

I rename my planets with tags such as [W] which means "Wonder" (reference to civilization series)

you might want to do something similar

I have not found a good way to rename planets into easily identifiable "regions" though

Regarding the loss of trade goods, if I trade it away then lose the planet, do I still have the benefit of the trade good or can I get the benefit back by buying the "distribution" back from the civ I traded it to?

Regarding the lack of search function, this is where GalCiv2 loses out to Civ4.  Civ4 has a listing of all the Wonder cities and also has a screen listing down all the techs available from different civs at one glance.  It really cuts down on a lot of micromanagement.  Strange that after 2 expansion packs and multiple patches, there is still no such feature.

You don't lose it when you trade it away.

You lose it when you lose the planet.

The civ you traded it to has it, but can't trade it (they don't own the rights).

The civ who took it from you has it, and can trade it.  The rights are tied to the trade good structure.

Since they just invaded you and you're currently at war with them, you have a better chance of taking it back from them than you do of buying it from them.

On another note, on the lower difficulties (Normal and below I think, perhaps just those below Normal) there is a lower limit on debt-if memory serves it's -5000BC.

remember than comparing civ4 to galciv2 is like comparing the size of a pumpkin to that of a lemon or a skycrapper to a house

their budget are not the same, and a lot was already added/fixed over original galciv2

But I don't think it's that difficult or costly to add a search function or a listing of techs.  It's just a spreadsheet-like feature, no tweaking of AI or other complicated stuff.  After all, the game already has spreadsheets and charts.

Well, in vanilla Dread Lords, once you started to gain intelligence on the other races you'd get a list of what techs they had researched.  It was, unfortunately, a single huge blob that was nearly unreadable.  It was far easier and faster to simply pop open the diplomacy screen and talk to everyone.  Or, if you're like me, you can use the Race Stats page to keep tabs on exactly what the AIs are researching (which, again in vanilla DL, works even at the Very Low intelligence level) and shake them down for cash and techs at every chance.

not difficult yes, but it takes some time, you need some art to design the screen, you need a few guys to test out the usability/accessibility

you need background coding to search/format the data that needs to be presented, you need alpha & beta testing for bugs

hey overall it's still a budget ...

yes and there were other priorities

hopefully maybe we'll see something like that in GC3 or even Elemental
