Noob UI question - how to navigate ships?

Hi,

i'm having a problem working with my ships. I'm trying to send several of my ships towards a planet. I read on a guide that you can select the planet via the 'Show Ships/Planet' button and then select the 'ship list' and click on the little targeting reticle for it to move towards the object you selected.

the problem is that once i have my target planet selected either by clicking on it directly or selecting it through the list, and then i want to go to the ship list to tell all the ones i want over there to move there, the view snaps back to the ship's location and i lose the planet and can't tell it to go there then anymore obviously via the reticle button. I did notice however sometimes it works but mostly it snaps back to the ship view.

can someone explain to me how to properly do this?

thanks for any comments

p.s. is there a way to see what ships are doing on the ship list? i have this big list of ships but there seems to be no indication which ships are moving somewhere, which are stationary, which freighters are already assigned to a trade route and which ones arent

Have you only tried on the ships list? or have you tried single left clicking the ship and single right clicking the destination?

The second one the way I always use because i tend to move multiple ships into the vicinity of the planet I want to attack before I attack it (as to take it over, populate it and defend it in one turn) but i can see how using the lists could be handy for redistrobuting population between planets and freighters! Might try it myself soon!

i was trying to follow the guide available and the specific section is here:

http://www.jeffpinard.com/planet_management.htm

the standard 'single' left click/right click option is what i can use, but its very cumbersome when you just want every ship you have to move to a certain spot. so if i see this planet that i want them to move to i don't wanna go to each ship individually and scroll the map back and forth doing the same thing.

the guide suggests you can just open the ship list and click the 'move' to reticle and they'll move towards the target on screen. as stated sometimes it works, but most of the time when i click on the ship list the view snaps back to whatever part of the galaxy the ship is at, so i still have to move all over the place to find the destination again.

it would be VERY useful if it would work reliably :)

I'm not sure I get exactly what you want to do, but perhaps you would be satisfied if you used fleets and rally points. With a good enough logistics ability, you can group quite a few of the smaller hulls together and send them all to a given rally point with just a couple of clicks.

I think the 'snap-back' thing you mention from the list is something you can turn off in game options (the option name is something like 'Allow camera focus to shift to the active ship').

yes i think you are right swicord, at least i have turned off the 'allow camera focus to shift...' and it seems to work so far.

ex) i put all ships on automate. i find a planet that i want to colonize. instead of searching map for ship and then scrolling manually to planet and then right click, i just open the ship list and click the 'move to' reticle and the ship will move towards my target.

thanks!

also when multiple ships are on the same coordinates, you don't need to make them into a fleet to move them all to a single position in one go

just select them all
