Fleet consistency?

Ok.... ive been playing a while now, I wouldnt say im great but i would say that ive learnt alot in playing against multiple hard AI's and reading and posting questions on this forum. Ive been concentrating on my achievements, you know defeat 2 hard AI's n all that not doing too bad but still not getting anywhere very fast. I have a small - medium sized defensive fleet (about 20 enforcers, 15 carriers, 20 lrm's, 10 overseers and 10 subverters) is that a good sized defensive fleet? Does it need to be larger or could it be reduced to make way for another offensive fleet? My offensive fleet is considerably larger with 50 enforcers, 30 carriers, 45 lrm's, 20 overseers and 20 subverters i also have some of the anti-fighter frigates cant remember the name... I guess what im asking is what is the desired fleet consistency of a defending fleet and an offensive fleet? I mean it looks like my offensive fleet could be split up and they could be made into 2 offensive fleets which obviously would be a lot better instead of a big dirty fleet like that, im just guessing at the numbers by the way i know its roughly about right but i cant remember exact numbers. Could anybody shed a bit of light on this subject please? :S

Oh yeah im playing on v 1.05 and i know its a bit generic and it would depend on the map and other things so any suggestions would be welcome

just remeber that all your Anti AI strategies goes right out of the window against human in Multiplayer...

I hate to rain on the parade - but yout question cannot be reasonably answered as

1) We know nothing of the AI fleet size and composition

2) what you want to do with them

What I mean by this is that the offensive fleet could be split in two and dominate both AI, or alternative a single AI could hammer both of your fleets if they were combined.

There is also the issue of not knowing how you are going to apply the offensive fleet - to kill the AI fleet(s), capture planets or kill infrastructure.

Sins is very hard to apply specific formulas to as each game is different - but a balanced fleet (which they seem to be) is a definate plus.

Sorry not to be more helpful, but there are too many unknowns, and even then, everything would be a best guess.

Early on, you should be attacking one enemy, primarily with LRM, since he'll probably have mostly light cruisers. Outside of that, yeah, it really depends on the enemy civ, how large your enemy is (are you taking 2 planets or 6?), etc.

Ok then thanks, I did think that it would depend on a lot of other things i just kinder wanted a bit of direction on what an ideal defensive fleet shoud have and offensive fleet should have. I mean is a fleet that has about 100 different kinds of ship in it a good offensive fleet? I know... it would depend on the AI and what i intend to do, so i would say it would be for killing AI fleets, planet killing and destroying enemy infrastructure. Would that be difficult to make a fleet that can do all 3 or would i need to split it up to make a fleet for each objective? Well thanks for the replies anyway guys youve all been a big help.

I tend to make 4 identical fleets of some cap ships, 10 of each LRM and HC, and 5 of most everything else. I then fill empty spaces with whatever. But that's if I have the time and cash to do so; in smaller maps or whatever, you need to focus more on different fleets with different makeups. Different civs have different strengths, and every ship has one or two good counters to it, so it changes as your enemies tech up.

Just remember, these strats of making multiple fleets etc... work in SP, but when you play a human, his larger fleet will pick apart yout smaller fleets one by one (even if you actually own more ships in total).... And sometimes this does apply with the AI as well...

oh, yes.  I have to keep all of my fleets together (into one super fleet to defend against a hard TEC's attacks.  it is quite annoying.  right when I get all of my losses replaced, he attacks again.) but I have his chokepoint now, so }:)
