1.1 upgrade issue

Hi

I loaded Impulse today to nab the 1.1 patch and got the 3.4meg file in less time than it took to load up Implus!

However it then shows me this dialoge:

I have 1.08gigs free, its in the default C: location and havnt any mods so I am unsure as to where the problem could be. Vista home basic sp1. Does the 3.4meg file extract into something huge?

Any ideas would be welcome as I imagine I will need to be on 1.1 to play entrenchment :(

Hi, DMNL.

You mention a dialog that came up, but the message isn't appearing in the forum.  Can you post that error message so the user community can help?

The dialog is "Not enough space available".

DMNL, do you have another drive partition with more room you can use for Impulse's temp files storage? Otherwise, your only solution is to free up some on your C drive. If you have another partition, you can change the temp folder by going to blue orb > preferences > folders.

Thanks Annatar.  Your comment helped me find out that this site prefers Internet Explorer to Firefox.  The error appears is I use the other browser. :)

Yep, I noticed my FF doesn't seem to like embedded images very much either. Go figure :P

The FF issue on the forums got started in the last update. Our web team is growing and they have a huge stack of projects. Many of them include the Sins and many other Stardock forums. You will see a good deal of change in the coming months I think.

The temp file location is almost always the culprit in the case of the error message you are getting. Annatar is your hero I think. :) If this is still the case after you change the location of the temp directory do the basic test and uninstall, restart, and install the full version of Impulse again, then restart once again to clear the cache. You will need to set the locations for download again of course. If neither of these work let us know.

It is strange though.. his update is 3.4 mb and it's extracting only 18 files. If he has 1.08gb free, how does Impulse handle temp storage for the 3mb patch to run out of 1.08gb worth of room?

I have no idea what happens behind the scenes with it, but maybe there's some room (pun intended :P) for optimization somewhere?

Thanks for the hints. I moved the folders to my D: drive which has nearly 10 gigs free and get the same error message. I will try a reinstall now.

Well, I just bought my copy of sins what a fantastic game, but I have to agree with Shadow_of_Light though. If there were only 5 gamers complaining about issues spread across multiple posts then change that to 6 and counting. This is ridiculous. How come this supporting software is so bad. I bought this game because I believe in supporting decent games/software. I live in a 3rd word country with -3 points in internet connectivity. I downloaded the entire 1.1 update via a cellphone(6 long hours worth)only to fail with the "smaller than expected" download problem. I cant justify massive 218Mb(in my case anyway) twice a day. I just want to know if these silly problems are really being attended to. Did I spend my money wisely(downloading this patch is costing me more than the game itself) Why am I supporting damaged software. I'm stuck on a version of this game I could have just copied and now that I paid for it I cant even update it. (1.2% into retry 3 of 218Mb download) or will this post be closed as well now?

This post was just a normal user trying to ask for help getting his game updated, it wasn't a rant or a complaint or a whine about locked threads until you two came in and made it one. If you have nothing useful to contribute to the original poster's issue, why not refrain from posting altogether?

And then you wonder why threads get locked. There are plenty of open "rant here" threads already running, don't hijack more.

Um.....I am a normal user with a problem. Ive read most of the posts I could get to(witch is difficult already) with no feasable answer yet. Is there a way to get the update without installing the game on some public/internet pc. I think I can get away with installing impulse, but not a full game. If so what are the steps I need to take or where can I read about it. If not is there any advice anyone can give me. P.S. This thread is for 1.1 issues and I posted a problem I have with 1.1 so I did not "hijack" anything. Please dont judge so easily.

Quoting Frogboy, reply 15

I would like to point out that the many people here who have not been able to get Impulse to work are also in the same boat as people who don't have an internet service.
There are not "many" people who can't get Impulse to work. There are a couple people who can't get Impusle to work who post in every thread.

Now, that said, we are working on an update to Impulse that will allow someone to archive their update, take it to a machine that is off-line where it will bring up their Impulse User ID and PW from their Impulse account and allow them to install it.

I don't have an ETA on it other than it should be in the next week or two I hope.
End of Frogboy's quote

:omg:
Well, that actually answers my question. Thank you

Many thanks Annatar11 and Seabass it seems sorted now. I reinstalled Impulse to the D: drive and when I checked the preferences the folders were also set to D: by default. The update took about 15 seconds and the game now says its version 1.11 (I think I can hear Moridins teeth grinding).

I think its cool you are thinking of those with connection problems as even in the UK I have had to suffer dial up over 100 year old phone lines which meant I wouldnt have considered buying from something like Impulse, I would have just hung around looking like someone at the arcade with no loose change.

Glad you got it working DMNL :)
