How to update store-bought 2008 version?

I purchased the CD of the 2008 versiond of The Political Machine recently.  When starting the game, it says I have 1.0.  I installed the Impulse software, and click the Games tab.  It recognizes that I have the game, and that I have version 1.00.001 installed, and that version 1.5 is available.  I click the Run button in the lower right, and all it says is:  Downloading Impulse Update - Connecting.  And that's it.  It's been saying that for awhile now, and I don't see anything happening.  What am I doing wrong?  It doesn't seem to be updating at all.

Also, although I created this user name account, I never saw anywhere to input a serial number at any time.  I purchased a CD version so that I could also install it on my laptop as well as my desktop, which judging from reading the support site is OK, but at this point I'm lucky to run the latest version at all.

UPDATE TO ABOVE: Finally spotted where to register the serial number in the Impulse software, and did so.  After clicking the Run button I now get an Update button.  However,  NOW it says "Please wait until Impulse finishes connecting to install an application."  I know my Internet is working....since I'm logging into this support forum.

If impulse isn't connecting your security software may be blocking it.  Either add it as an exception or turn it off.

If Impulse is tryin to update itself and failing it may be easier/better to jsut do a full install atop your current build.  Youc an get it here: Impulse Client - Full
