What makes a game look good?

What makes a game look good?  In Age of Mythology when i upgrade my mens shields, the actual little men have shields.  Why doesn't that happen in other games?  in most games when you uprgrade your men they don't look any different, wich is not only boreing but is also unhelpful.  in Ae of Mythology or Rise of Legends you know how up graded a unit is by just looking at it, although Rise of Legends the units don't look better they just have glowing guns. 

 

Why don't other games do this?

I'd say if you and the enviroment can effect the looks of your units then thats a plus for the game. I like how in mythology the men left skelotons behind and if they had lasted a little longer you would get the feeling of accomplishment with having fought there. As your mummy's cross the sands towards your enemy's fort you would remember that battle you had in the beginning, whether it was an easy victory or a crushing defeat.

Kudos on the upgrades affecting looks. I never really got how many games boast an interesting tech tree but you wouldn't know it if you hadn't mad the upgrades yourself.

 

Overall the thing that really sells a games look is an affectable unit if I may be so bold to claim.

In Medieval II: Total War your units change as you upgrade them.

The basic spear is just a stick with a pointed metal tip, the upgrade gives it barbs. Basic armor is just padded jackets, but upgrading them to chain mail gives them... chain mail! Two-handed swords first look dull and heavy, at tier 2 they look shiny and well-crafted, then at tier 3 they get wavy blades making them Flamberges.

It really is a great game.

if you mean by modding the current units i would suggest changing the amount of lasers for the damage upgrade, blocks of armour on the ships for the armour, and for the shield upgrades the shields would need to be shinier.
