Having a problem with Application Icons + applying Icon Packages

This has only just started happening, but I switched from using ObjectDock to normal desktop icons. So, I decided to download a new IconPackage from deviantart. Before I applied it I realized my icons looked like this:http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn184/CadpatPat/IconProblemApp.jpg

I don't know how to fix it!

But its extremly ugly to look at. :annoyed:

Secondly, when applying downloaded IconPackages the icons don't seem to load....even after a restart. I'm not exactly sure if I'm doing something wrong?

I have the same EXACT issue -- under vista x64 (installed with the new crappy instal app) -- when I tried stardock central this problem did not exist, _BUT_ I just logged in as another user and YES, iconpackager makes alll the desktop icons GENERIC AGAIN!!

I was going to look into rebuilding the icon cache or something to fix this, but I recall having no luck.

ANYBODY else have similar experiences!?!

Catpatpat, what OS are you using?

What version of IP?

OK, just FYI Opera (latest build) is a perfect trial candidate.  I reinstalled Opera hoping the custom icon for the .exe would return, but for every other user the icon is GENERIC (both the shortcut _and_ the .exe itself).  One thing of note:  the opera shortcut itself would NOT scale properly on the desktop (ie. in Vista when you hold control and scroll the mousewheel the icon would not scale above a certain point).  I don't know what this means, but Opera is a perfect app to check for this behavior!

I uninstalled Iconpackager (thru stardock central) this morning, but had to leave for work -- I'll check later!

I also pulled a support ticket and reported this post as evidence it's not a one-off problem ;)

(ps. it's disturbing that it makes not just shortcuts, but icons for ALL .exe files generic!!!)

This is new, It's definately related to IconPackager4. Some icons are ok, alot are fubar with default icon. If you right click a shortcut or file and choose to change the icon, choose one from the file or any one and click apply and ok, Guess What? the icon stays default and does NOT change. It's easy to get fed up with updates that break the program instead of making it better.

If you uninstall IconPackager, all your icons will go back to normal.

Deleteing and/or repairing icon cache etc... does no good, doesn't help

I am running Vista Ultimate x64, all updated to latest patches. GTX 280 with latest release nvidia drivers.

Thanks TeeggerToo! I've just built a new box running Vista Ultimate x64. Video card is Radeon HD4850. Yesterday I installed Impulse and rather rashly installed pretty much all of my OD Ultimate apps. The last thing installed was IconPackager 4.10.172. I applied several MyColors themes, then ran WindowBlinds. I can't be sure exactly when it happened, but the icons (desktop, Quick Launch, Start menu - everywhere) for all my 32-bit apps reverted to the default Windows icon.

I tried different themes and then opened IconPackager for the first time, tried the "repair" buttons and changed icon packages. Through all this, the "Spring" theme's shortcut-overlay remained on every desktop icon. Deleting IconCache.db and the Explorer thumbnails followed by a reboot didn't help. My Aero Glass effects stopped working at some stage. Then I uninstalled WB 6, reset MyColors to the Vista default theme and did a reboot. Aero Glass then worked, and the shortcut-overlays for all desktop icons reverted to a large ugly Vista default. The 32-bit-application icons remained as the (blnk) default.

It was possible to repair some of the 32-bit app icons by changing them to something else (anything but the icon that used to be displayed). Once that change was applied and the icon appeared on the desktop (it didn't always change from the default), I went back into the icon properties and set the icon to the correct one. I soon got tired of doing that.

Finding this thread, I uninstalled IconPackager and ALL the application icons immediately self-repaired. The icons on the desktop still have the ugly large shortcut overlays, so I'm trying to figure out how to repair that - but this is a minor issue. You only realise how important the icons are when you loose them :-)

I raised a ticket with Stardock on this issue.

I realise now that those ugly shortcut overlays are what's meant to be shown. I've been using themes for so long I'd forgotten how much prettier they are :)  Vista Shortcut Manager from frameworkx.com was used to deal with the overlays.

Now that IconPackager is uninstalled, applying a MyColors theme applies the theme's nice shortcut overlay. Unfortunately my Aero Glass features instantly stop working (e.g. no transparency, no Flip 3D. I'm raising a ticket on that issue. But for now am just happy to have my app icons back ... Aside from these Stardock issues, I'm really impressed with Vista 64 and how smooth the migration has been.

So... any news from Stardock on this very irritating bug? Just now I've discovered I'm not the only one and, even more important, It was not any action on my side that caused this, I'll repeat, very irritating bug!

You guys should really test your new releases better...

p.s.: XP Pro SP3 here.

Have you emailed support@stardock.com so they can take a look and pass it on to the devs?

The SD testing is pretty thourough but there are so many combinations of hardware and software that getting everythin right is very hard.  it almost makes me with for an apple  :)  (No, not really)

I'm having what sounds like the exact same problem. Whenever I apply a new icon package all of my application icons get set to the package's default. It looks like the Iconcache.db file gets wiped out. I made a copy of mine before I applied a icon package but was unable to get Windows to use it once I copied it back.

I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit.

Icon Packager is pretty much worthless at this point unless I just want to use default icons. Any word on this?

I just installed update for 4.10.177 and I can't change any icons. My OS is XP Pro (clean). Any way to get an older version?

I have this issue also. It makes the program worthless.

Let's try something.  Let's unregister shellext64.dll.

  1. From Start –> Run, type “cmd” then click on Open.
  2. Type “regsvr32 /u shellext64.dll
    regsvr.JPG
  3. Reboot

Report back what happens

Sorry,

Been busy with work. I will try this when I get a free moment

It said the object could not be found.

Additionally, since installing my colours, all my programs keep crashing.

A shame because on XP it all works perfectly.

I'm using Vista home preimum

I am having the same issue with Vista 64. My Outlook Icon that is the default email client pinned to my start menu doen't exist anymore after the install of the new icon packager.
