Key Bindings: + and - for gamespeed?

I know that there are player options to control Rate of Income, Rate of ship building, Rate of research, ect.

I recently noticed that there are Key Bindings for gamespeed. Increase gamespeed is + and - is decrease gamespeed.

I loaded up a single player random map and tried decreasing the gamespeed. There is no feedback given when pressing either of these keys and they do not appear to actually be doing anything.

  1. What exactly is the function of these + and - keys?
  2. If they are affecting gamespeed what is the percentage of change per keypress?

Works for me. Were you using the numpad or the top row above the alphabet? Maybe try the other if it doesn't work. The speed settings mimic the replay controls: 2x, 4x, 8x and I forget if there's a 6x. It does give you a status message on top of the screen when you change the game speed.

@ Annatar11, thanks for the reply.

I'm using the keys on the top row. It appears what happened was I depressed and held the - key down and I received no message. The reason for this was that once you pass the lowest or highest speed setting you can keep clicking but no more messages appear. I'm not sure why no messages appeared initially appeared; perhaps I missed them, but I never got the confirmation clicks either.

A PC reboot and game reload and I now get the message and confirmation click for each speed update at the top center of the screen.

If however you are pressing the + key and keep clicking after the "Game update rate changed to 8x" message, you will get the confirmation click but no further messages. Same thing if you click - after getting the 1x message.

I'm still unclear though exactly what it means: " Game update rate changed.." I understand your reference to replay (like a sports replay in slow motion) Perhaps that is what these Keys are for to change the Replay speed of a recorded game?

I thought, being an RTS game, perhaps gamespeed referred to an overall slowing down of the games so old geezers like myself don't have to click on things with the lightning speed of youth;)   You know like a way to compensate for arthritic fingers, addled minds, and such :D

I think this is intentional, since it's always between 1x (normal) and 8x, can't go above or below, so that's why it doesn't display any messages since you're not actually changing it.

"Game update rate" is their fancy way of saying how fast stuff will go. Unfortunately, beyond playing at the slowest settings (customized when you create the game, by clicking the Game Options button on the launch screen), you can't slow it down any more. You can speed it up to the 8x, so everything will happen 8x as fast (just watch some ships move around in 8x :P), and you can slow it back down to normal.

But it's not exclusive to watching replays, it does modify the actual play speed.
