How (when ?) does the AI use the players ship designs ?

I read somewhere that (patch 1.5 of the original GalCiv II) the AI could use your own ship designs in scenarios, but I have never seen the AI used one of mine and I have at least over 30 ship design and have played the whole campaign and also scenarios with them.

When - or how - are the AI going to use them ?
