Beta 1 Test - 64bit edition??

Where you want us to test DemiGod, should we not be testing a 64 bit version of the .exe file as well as the 32bit?

Is there going to be a 64bit compiled edition?  As more and more games have them.

Mose users with vista are taking the jump to 64bit as nearly all applications and games work.  There is a very noticable speed increase in 64 bit games.

...No. 64bit executable is just going to be more work for little gain. The large address aware header for 64bit OSes is more than enough to offset the 32bit virtual addressing space disadvantage, and Demigod isn't going to use 4GB of addressing space in the forseeable future.

The speed increases seen in Vista x64 vs x86 are usually due to the graphics card drivers working better, not the actual game compiling. HL2 for example, actually ran slightly slower once the Source engine went 64-bit, although level load times went down significantly.

Both Hellgate London & Crysis both had very visible increases in performance with exacly the same graphical settings {usually higher settings}.

Also not really for these forums but MS sql server 64 bit performs better that MS sql 32bit installations.

So this post was just a general post for support of 64bit OS's that games developers are creating seperate .exe for them.  And as this was beta 1 though if they wanted to suport that then this was as good as time as any to check the engine on the hardware.

Not to worry if its a no go.... was just a query.

I think there is a technical problem to realize a 64bit version. They need to compare the state on all machines. I think they use some memory checksums for that. When compiling 64bit the memory layout will change because the sizes of the variables will change (integers are getting twice the size they had before)

As a result when a 32bit demigod exe tries to play with a 64bit demigod.exe all kind of desyncs will occure.

The same problem exists with supreme commander

Hi Gabberkooij,

I'm not sure about that.  Its like saying that all your windows 64bit servers will only be able to share files with 64 bit OS's.   like both examples Crysis and Helgate London they both play online and both 64 & 32 bit online gaming come together in one game.

But in all developments there are bad and good ways to develop.  there should not be any technical issues having a 32bit and a 64 bit gaming system as long as the network interface development is done properly.

Not to worry though the current Beta 1 is not very taxing anyway.  Hopefully Demigod will take on from the lead of "Company of Heroes" for the final graphic quality & AI.

again my 2c

I definately aggree that games need to get with the times and start tailoring toward the x64 platform.  Online polls are showing that more people go Vista x64 than x86 nowdays.

i'm testing it on vista64.

would love to see a x64compile of demigod, but we talked about this in supcom already, don't think it will happen, too bad.
