Pulse tech cost effectiveness

I tried to post this earlier, but had some issues with firefox and forum, so:

 

I'm still learning each factions unique research tree, and figuring out which is good/bad etc. As playing Vasari i discovered the pulse gun line to effect only a few ships. My question is, are they worth the cost and research time compared to phase missile upgrades?

 

I think the best bet to focus on phase technology because they benefit a lot of ships including all the fighters/bombers. The pulse gun research only upgrades the light frigate's and the support ships firepower. On top of that the only pulse beam research, which only benefits 4 capitals of 5 comes after the pulse gun tech. Last there's a research that increases bombardment range, is this worth the cost?

If you have nothing else to spend your money on or you've done the other research, it's probably not a bad idea to get it. But I certainly go for the phase missile techs first.

In most games you will only research a select few techs.

But phase missiles are definitly extremely valuable, even necessary for vasari. I usually get at least 20% phase penetration.

I mean they are just so great. 20% + of the damage you do with assailents fighters, bombers, and some cap ships bypasses shields, bypasses shield mitigation, and goes straight for the hull.

It's not unusual with a good vasari fleet to kill cap ships when they still have 100-200 shields left.

I typically don't get more than one type of + damage. Just get the one that benefits your fleet the most depending on what ships you have.

The pulse tech Tree has no need to be researched, until you play very particular counter strategies (ie carrier spamming, sending 20-30 skirmishers to take out the carriers) or very lately in large games. Even when you get RA up (if you go for it), it is often better to scuttle the skirmishers, since you'll get so many carriers (and flak), getting the control of the sky wont be a real problem.

And, as you point it, Vasari's main weap is the phase missile. Flak use phase missiles. Strikecrafts use phase missiles. Most caps use phase missiles. Assaillant use phase missiles. Even turrets use phase missiles. So it is very cost effective to research phase missiles, much more effective than pulse tech line.

As for bombardement range increase, it is like a goodie, since if you send bombers it often means that you have total (or almost achieved) control of space around the planet.

Thx for the replies. So basically the pulse tech is inferior to the phase missiles, except a few counter strat. I think a little tweak is needed to make it worth the cost, like adding extra planet bombardment damage to the "intense pulse beam" research.
