Star bases as planets!!!

Wow...I actually really like this idea...

What if star bases were treated like planets? With a growing population, research and production value, taxes, etc. No where near as much as a good planet...but still interesting to develop! Some social projects would be able to be incorporated into a star base, most would not.

The panel for a star base would be identical to that of a planet, but with limited options as to what could be built. Star bases could even have THEIR OWN list of military and social projects, and ships should be able to "dock" there. Kinda like how ships stay in orbit around a planet, a star base could have it's own limited ship list.

Keep in mind that morale would come into play, as a star base with low morale could rebel away from your CIV and join the I-leage (for example)

That would be really cool. It might end up getting really complicated if you build a lot of starbases like i do. I like to have one per sector.

I think perhaps a habitable pod module being added is an idea. Although I think there has to be a lower population maximum than planets.

i remember when i first started playing GalCiv being REALY confused that Star Bases didnt have population. It just seemed realy realy weird. Making them more planet like should certinaly be considered.
Population should probably be limited to a few million (and dependant on habitation modules)

Yeah...population would definitely have to be realistic...no BILLIONS...just a million or so. The mod sounds cool, and maybe it could be limited to those "citizens" being taxed and generating income from the starbase.

I guess it would be another economy mod?

A neat idea. But with empire population in the 1/2 a trillion to trillion plus range, and even my underpopulated worlds at 2-3 billion...what would really be the point of fiddling with a million or so people on starbases.

Isn't it more likely that there already ARE several thousand to a million people on the starbase...its just too small a quantity to be worth tracking. After all, as far as I know you don't lose any population for the crew when building starships...

Valamir...it could take place as a "habitat mod".

You wouldn't need to have a population on EVERY starbase...but it's always nice to have a starbase in that distance corner of the galaxy where the aliens can't find you...kinda like a trump card in the event of war. Humans are like roaches...you kill us off...we keep coming back! This starbase could build a colony ship to get the species up and running again.

Ever play Starcraft? It's nice to have a zergling drone buried in the dirt near all of the resources in case the main hive gets wiped out.

I must admit that I've stayed away from this thread as the title didn't sound like a good idea...... but on finally reading what you actually wrote I've got to say...... that's a cool idea. It'd give starbases some "personality" as a community.

Well I for one would definately like Starbases to have orbits just like planets (because stacking on starbases is ugly)

I don't know about treating Starbase *exactly* like planets. I do think it's an interesting idea... and I would like to see a way for mid to late game colony ships and transports to put those extra people to use. Dumping off excess population at a starbase and getting some kind of positive effect for it would be great!

I DO NOT think Starbases should grow in population, rather they need to import it. :)

I agree, or a maxed cap on population. After all living space is severly limited.

I just like the idea of giving them a little more personality, something to think a little more about....

But biggest on my wish list for starbases is....... drumroll.......

Sorting out the stupid micromanagement necessary to keep them up to date!

I thought up a couple ideas for star base mods of my own. You should be able to turn star bases into a system. I realy wana create stars + slanets. Have it cost money to build it, like a Terror Star, and have the planets be fairly low pq to lessen cheese. Also I think an advanced movement modual would be cool. Have it give like +10 movement but have it be extreamly expensive to build. This isnt my most coherent message ever, its late and I cant sleep
