Paint.NET 2.x running on Linux:

As for Mac OS X, the Paint.NET's author writes:

May 20th, 2008: Well, I bought a MacBook Pro. That doesn't mean I'll be writing a Mac version, but I am approaching the Paint.NET 4.0 design from the standpoint of having much more platform and UI-toolkit independence ("UI toolkit" referring to WinForms, WPF, Cocoa, GTK, etc.). Please do not inquire further though, as we'd just be spinning our wheels with speculation ... I have yet to write any Mac code, even "hello world". But I'll at least admit that a native Mac version is desirable.

End of quote

I have some little experience with accessing Cocoa (one of Mac OS X's native GUI APIs) from C# code and it wasn't easy.

If Paint.NET will run on Mac OS X, it will be the Windows Forms version, I am sure.

Note that .NET 2.0 programs work on Linux and Mac OS X. Most .NET 3.5 programs also work. Programs that use WPF do not run anywhere except Windows. The problem with Paint.NET is apparently that it uses many native Win32 calls.

So, I figure this program does not compare to Adobe Photoshop, but does it come close in a way? Does it have similar features such giving things a glass look and stuff like that or is a program like Adobe Photoshop still the alternative? Just wondering.

This is more like Super-Paint by Microsoft.  But it supports psp files and is free.  I use it and theGIMP because I'm a cheap bastard.  I use Paint.net more though.  :)

Worth a look if you don't have any of the commercial software.

I use the GIMP but would only use Paint.NET when I get it to run on Mac OS X.

I use Windows only for Internet Explorer and programming/work.

Super-Paint? Never heard of it. For a second I thought you were comparing Paint.NET to MS Paint, a piece junk. I use Paint.NET along with Jasc Paint shop pro and Real Draw Pro.

Well, it's not that I wasn't. I was curious about how it works since I saw it has layers like Adobe Photoshop. Was wondering how such a small program could have similar features to such a huge,  expensive program and offer it for free.

I haven't used Photoshop but I can tell you Paint Shop has effects that PDN doesn't. You can download plugins for PDN including the psd option.
