What the hell, why did I lose?

Abrupt end?

Hey guys,

I've been reading up on this game for awhile, finally made the plunge and bought Galciv2/dark avatar/twilight.

This was my first game, I was the Yor, and was doing actually really, really well. Every war I was in I was winning, and my economy was doing well, and I was conquering neighbors planets.  I maybe spent 8-9 hours on this one map alone, when all of a sudden I clicked turn, and boom... says I came to an abrupt end with no explanation why.

I wouldnt be mad, if at least told me WHY I lost... I'm just very confused, how do I stop it from happening again if I don't know what did it to begin with?

Thanks!

BTW, it wasnt an ancesion (sp) defeat, my enemy still had quite a few turns left before he claimed that victory.

Did you have Technology victory conditions on?
I could be that one of the races researched that whole tech line and won.

Did you have influence victory conditions on?
What did the mini-map look like? Cuz you only need 75% of the map to win that way.

These are just 2 quick things off the top of my head.

Yep, technology and influence was on. Where would it say who actually won and why? I didn't see it in the end game graphs/info.

Thanks for the reply.

Good question. I don't know, I haven't lost a game yet.

Typically, in the text underneath the huge DEFEAT sign, it will tell you what happened. Not always directly though. It might be something like "The [your opponent's name here' empire made the invention of hyperdrive look like a toaster oven... blah, blah, blah" if your opponent won a tech victory.

You can check your winning-status and the status of your opponents in the game. Click on the "Civilisations manager"-button, it is next to the "ship yard"-button.
Then switch to the "Victory"-data sheed.
There you can see how close every race is to the different victorys.
During the last turn somebody should have 100% in one victory category.

Try reloading the game from an AutoSave - which should place you within 5-10 turns of the end and check the civilization manager to see what is about to happen. Normally the game will warn you via GNN when one of the other Civs is close to victory and, as mentioned above, the defeat screen should tell you who won and which victory condition they achieved.
