Discovery offers glimpse of era when the desert was a lush paradise

A group of dinosaur hunters has stumbled across an ancient human graveyard in the middle of the , offering a unique glimpse of an epoch when much of the desert was a lush paradise.

The find represents several firsts, said paleontologist Paul Sereno, whose team published the discovery in Thursday's issue of the journal PLoS ONE. It's the biggest Saharan graveyard ever found from the period between 4,500 and 10,000 years ago, a time that scientists have known mostly from scattered fragments of human remains buried in the hot sands.

The period of the Green Sahara, as some researchers call it, began when a fluctuation in the Earth's orbit changed African weather patterns and brought more rain to the desert. The lakes that developed supported 6-foot-long pike fish, turtles, crocodiles and an array of other wildlife and human settlers.

But the dunes eventually returned, swallowing for ages any record of how Stone Age people managed to thrive at the site in northern .

"It's really the story of humanity's struggle to exist in an environment undergoing severe changes," Sereno said.

The team found the bones by the ancient lakeshore in 2000 and excavated the site through 2006. Sereno, who made his name in paleontology by unearthing giant crocodiles and new kinds of dinosaurs from the , was floored when a photographer with the team found old human bones in the dunes near where other group members were digging for dinosaur remains.

Knowing he would need more than dinosaur specialists to understand the site's full scientific story, Sereno enlisted several outside archeologists who specialize in the study of ancient human remains and settlements.

The most important discovery at the site, called Gobero, was an expanse consisting of 200 graves, including those of people from two separate populations called the Kiffian and the Tenerian.

One of the most moving and mysterious burials was of a Tenerian woman who was buried facing two young children. Pollen was found beneath the three skeletons, suggesting the three had been buried on a bed of flowers.

The diversity of material from the graves, homes and even garbage dumps makes the site unique, said study co-author Elena Garcea, an archeologist from the of in .

"It's not just one site, it's really eight sites where people buried their dead but also lived," Garcea said Thursday at a news conference on the discovery in The conference was held by the National Geographic Society, which helped fund the research.

The older population of Kiffians were taller and had heartier builds than the Tenerians, who settled in the area toward the end of the Green Sahara period. One Kiffian male whom the team uncovered stood well over 6 feet.

Sereno said he hopes to return the specimens to when the country can build a national museum, which also would house his Saharan dinosaur finds.

According to recent news reports, a top observatory that has been measuring sun spot activity predicts that global temperatures will drop by two degrees over the next 20 years as solar activity slows and the planet drastically cools down. They suggest this could potentially herald the onset of a new ice age. Following the end of the sun’s most active period in over 11,000 years, the last 10 years have displayed a clear cooling trend as temperatures post-1998 leveled out and are now decreasing.

Earlier this year, John Coleman, the founder of The Weather Channel, stated that manmade global warming is “the greatest scam in history,” adding, “I am amazed, appalled and highly offended by it. Global Warming; It is a scam.” Coleman said the theory of global warming is based on fraudulent science.

“’s tax and regulatory climate is already chasing jobs from this state left and right and these new regulations will make matters worse,” Doherty said. “Rather than conforming our policies to questionable scientific theories, we should be looking at the concrete economic indicators that show our state’s economy is in trouble. And we should be taking steps to help people who are losing jobs and being forced out of their homes by this state’s anti-economic growth agenda – not making matters worse.”

So you see that there is global warming and cooling but not by man.

After the “big ice age” where the Earth was covered by a two to three mile thick ice for about two million years the ice melted soaking the lands and as the Earth warms it is drying up. What I am saying is the Earth is gong back to its normal very hot climate. It has been doing this in cycles of hot and cold for thousands of years always getting a little hotter than before and cooling down but not as cool as before.

To say that man is a contributing factor in a cycle that has gone on long before man was the dominant species is a joke in science, but very serious if you are of the religion of hating man. So if you are of this religion I wish you well, if you are sucked in by the fake science, then you need to study harder.

Data coincide with increasing solar output

The planet Mars is undergoing significant global warming, new data from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) show, lending support to many climatologists' claims that the Earth's modest warming during the past century is due primarily to a recent upsurge in solar energy.

Martian Ice Shrinking Dramatically
According to a September 20 NASA news release, "for three Mars summers in a row, deposits of frozen carbon dioxide near Mars' south pole have shrunk from the previous year's size, suggesting a climate change in progress." Because a Martian year is approximately twice as long as an Earth year, the shrinking of the Martian polar ice cap has been ongoing for at least six Earth years.
The shrinking is substantial. According to Michael Malin, principal investigator for the Mars Orbiter Camera, the polar ice cap is shrinking at "a prodigious rate."
"The images, documenting changes from 1999 to 2005, suggest the climate on Mars is presently warmer, and perhaps getting warmer still, than it was several decades or centuries ago," reported Yahoo News on September 20.

Okay for the people that bothered me about making up the data here is another group of scientists that disagree with man made global warming. The data is about the same on the dwarf planet Pluto as well so please tell me how our pollution reached a trillion miles out into space to warm up other planets while ignoring the Sun had anything to do with it.

No one is desputing that the climate changes naturally. However, climate change normally occurs over the span of thousands of years, not a few decades.

Please provide proof of this. From the data I have seen over the years I find this not the case. What I have seen is that as the earth warms up the land dries out. The reason the Sahara used to be a lush green area is not due to man but the Sun. we went from a ball of ice to lush everything and now it is drying out.

There have been documented warming and cooling that has happened in less than 50 years. The mini ice age was on such event.

Greenland was warm enough to grow grapes 20 years later it was covered in snow and ice. Where are the thousands of years for that? Now it is warming up again and working its way back to being green again. All within the last 500 years it has gone from green and lush to ice and snow and back to lush, or at least starting to. And this is in recorded human history rather than going by paleontologists best guesses.

I have an open mind, I will listen to valid arguments pro or con my own beliefs and understandings but to take at face value four reports that only cover the last 158 years (the end of the mini ice age to today) and ignoring all we know that came before it and say this is the cause is madness. To further state that the cure to this is we shut down the economies of most of the world to reduce this climate change by 7/10 of a single degree on average over the next 100 years, is insanity!

What they are saying is if we shut down all coal and oil usage, stop burning trees, and build no more homes. We as a species can drop the average global temperature by 0.67 degrees over 100 years. but that is only if all their calculations are correct, if all their models are spot on, and if there are no other outside influences not covered by the report. So we are back to the Stone Age for 0.67 degrees. Are you truly going to notice this drastic rise in temperature? Can you see yourself standing out side and saying man, its hot out here by an extra 0.67 degrees 100 years from now?

The predictions are just as crazy. The oceans will rise 27 to 35 feet. Oops wait that was wrong make that 2.7 to 3.5 inches. They fooled with the numbers to scare people into doing what they wanted which is to cripple America. Why else are they harping on the Kyoto accords that exclude the largest polluters in the world and shut down Europe and America? Keep in mind the same arguments were made in the 70’s just as the last cooling trend was ending. We were going to have blocks of ice that would cover the empire state building in New York. Then the warming trend started and they still say shut down oil production and coal usage only this time instead of freezing to death we are all going to die from heat stroke. By the time they got all the data up and published we were out of the warming trend and back to a cooling trend. That is not thousands of years it has happened in my lifetime. The 1940’s to the 1960’s was cooling, the 1970’s to the 1980’s was warming, and we are cooling again. Notice a trend here? No mater what is happening man is at fault, and America is the worst of mankind.

Most of this was predicted by NASA back in the 60’s and confirmed in the 70’s late 80’s

I heard of Doc, Dopey, Sneezy, Sleepy, etc.  First time I heard there was an 8th one called pluto. ;)  I thought he was a dog.

Yeah, you think that is funny I wrote a book the depended on Pluto and they demoted it. It has three moons but they don’t want to count it as a planet any more. Fluorine has nine atoms the solar system has/ had nine planets. Great for a SciFi book. Had to change the whole book because every chapter pointed to this. Please don’t get me started.

It reminds me of a science project I did in the 10th grade.  Cant do it anymore with only 8 planets.

I guess Treehugger ran out of democrat talking points. Too bad I liked debating him.
