How do phase gates work

I was playing my first game as Vasari and created several phase gates mainly just to get returning armada, which was working fine.  Then I decided to experiment with sending fleets between phase gates and couldnt figure out how to make it work.  How do you send fleets between gates?

You don't need to do anything, really. Phase gates passively create connections between planets that have them (these phase lanes are not shown on the map), and when you show your ships to move between planets with gates, they'll go in a single jump instead of flying the normal phase lane route.

Ships will always take phase gate shortcuts if they're available when you tell them to go somewhere - even trade ships do :)

what happens if a phase gate is destroyed before the fleet using it arrives?

Nothing, the fleet arrives normally :)

Too bad. I'd like to see them go splat!

It would be funny if ships mid-jump would get their exit coordinates messed up and crashed into the planet, emerged in a random grav well, or just flew far far away into space never to be seen again..

:) better yet, they drop of out phase space speed. then crawl to their destination.

Then you might as well self destruct them anyway and rebuild the fleet, it'd still be faster :)
