choppy sound and terrible "lag" after late-game end of turns

I have noticed when playing ToA 1.96 that on gigantic maps about 3 years in or so some strange things happen after ending each turn.

After clicking end of turn everything is fine for the first say 30-45 seconds with the background music playing and the trun button greyed out. But then things get weird. I hear an initial "hitch" in the sound / music (at which time also maybe an events window or report window pops up or even a diploamcy screen from an AI or research completed screen). Then the audio gets very choppy (even looping / stuttering) and the game itself unresponsive / non-interactive to mouse clicks, etc. even though the turn button has come back. If I wait say another minute or so (with the sound /music all messed up and the game essentially locked) then finally the game seems to "catch up" and the music and animations play smoothly and the game is responsive and smooth again. Moreover all mouse or keyboard actions that were effectively queued up then immediately take place in rapid sequence.

I should mention that this only seems to happen on games with Masochistic or Obscene difficulty levels (haven't tried suicidal yet) where by this point in time the AIs have a lot of ships and fleets active.

Also note that I am using the trick of placing my cursor in an unexplored part of the map before I click end of turn so I don't have the horrid fleet movement drawing times I used to have (advice from Loupindour et al on these same forums).

I will follow-up with a reply post of a relevant debug.err for a typical game suffering from this behavior.

Sadly though I really enjoy ToA this makes the game unplayable for me in later game stages. Note that the problem also seems to get progressively worse as the game progresses ...

The above debug.err file covers loading a saved game, ending the turn, dealing with the pop-ups and then ending the game.
Please note my drivers are up-to-date.

Also I have since disabled the on board RealTek Audio device (which I wasn't using anyways) but no effect on the problem.
I also run into this problem with late games. I tend to either live with it or turn the background music off with Ctrl-M. To be honest it does get a bit annoying repeating the same track for however many turns. That said, I would love to see this fixed. I think it could simply be that there isn't enough buffer to keep playing sound smoothly while the new turn is started.
It isn't really the music that bugs me as you said it can be turned off. It is the fact that though the turn button has reappeared the game is very laggy / unresponsive. Also some of the reports that flash at the "start" of the new turn (like diplomacy, research complete, production reports, GNN) are similarly messed up and trying to interact with the game can lead to somewhat unexpected consequences (like pissing off an AI in the diplomacy screen). Once the game "catches up" then everything is smooth again including the music. So I view the music as more of a correlation not a causal event.
Well I take back what I said a little bit.

While turning off the music / sound manually doesn't effect the aberrant behavior (i.e. game lag, unresponsive, choppy animations, slow scrolling, etc.) until the game (and sound) has time to play catch up ... disabling my SB X-Fi card in Device Manager does!!

So now when I end a turn, once the new turn starts and the reports come up everything is smooth as silk. I can immediately and fluidly interact with the game, all video / animations are fluid and there is zero lag. Of course it is all soundless.

That definitely seems like some sort of bug or bad interaction with my SB X-Fi card. Note my SB drivers are the latest available from Creative (April 2008).

Can one of the techs comment on this? Would you like any more info from me? It is a bit disappointing that I have to disable my sund card entirely to play the end of games now as I cannot even play MP3s or anything on my computer with my sound card disabled.

Note btw this behavior did not happen to me prior to 1.96. Then again I never ventured to Masochistic or Obscene difficulty on large maps until ToA v1.96. So who knows.

Help please.

Turns out it happens with my on-board sound as well (RealTek Audio on my ABIT motherboard). Like I said the only thing that works is to disable both my SB card and my on-board sound in Device Manager.

Wonder if it is an issue with the audio codecs. Any thoughts?
Sigh doesn't seem to be my audio codecs.

The ones I have are all the standard ones that come with Windows XP SP2 (except lhacm.acm which is used by Ventrilo chat and I doubt that is the issue).

Note I had the same issues with my previous set of sound drivers as well as the current most up-to-date ones.

No clue. Definitely seems like something odd is amiss.
Changing the HW acceleration via dxdiag doesn't help either.

Only remedy atm is to disable all sound devices altogether in Device Manager. That can'r be intended behavior.
This happens to me too once in a while, though I only play medium and large maps. I think it is due to various problems though. Sometimes it's because my wireless mouse is sending messages to the screen, which try to pop up over other windows and sometimes do and sometimes don't succeed. Even with fresh batteries once in a while it will send a message about a bad connection or bad batteries, whatever. Grrr.

Other times I wouldn't be surprised if it's something stupid like Quicktime doing one of its endless attempts to check if I have downloaded itunes yet and doing me the "favor" or slowing down my computer while reminding me of the wonderful option of downloading and installing it -- yet again. (I've really begun to hate quicktime for that!) Most people's computers I see also have a ton of icons in their tray representing all sorts of programs running in the background that they don't need. They're quite often searching for new pop-up ads disguised as "updates" and doing all sorts of unnecessary busywork.

Pretty much every program I've ever used tends to bog down endlessly or just for a long time when some other program tries to use up too much memory or CPU cycles. ToA is no different that way. Strat games often use up a ton of memory, and you say this happens on larger maps, so you might be writing to your virtual memory(your hard disk) a lot, slowing you WAY down. Even 2 gigs of memory is not a lot for strat games these days, whatever you may hear to the contrary by people who don't want to admit their system is a little underpowered memory wise or programmers who don't want to admit their programs are memory hogs. Adding memory often completely transforms how well a strat game runs.
Thanks for the input but the games I am playing are not even close to my memory limits (i.e. 900MB used vs 3GB RAM available). I also still get the same behavior with clearing everything non-essential out of my system tray.

At this point I am pretty sure it is a sound card issue with SB X-Fi cards. In fact I found that even in earlier turns on say a gigantic map there is a perceptible "blip" or short interval of time where the animations "stutter" though the music plays fine. Later on the music starts to also get choppy. And finally late in the game as I stated in previous posts the game becomes excessively laggy.

All of this behavior (whether early, mid, or late game) disappears when the sound card is disabled in Device Manager.

So I usually play with my sound card enabled until say about year 3 on a gigantic or large map and then am forced to disable the sound card and play the rest of the way out in silence (well except I put my I-pod on to finish things out

I wish I could get a response from the devs. I have tried to provide as much info as possible and like I said I have pretty much narrowed the problem down to an issue with my SB X-Fi card. But alas nothing so far ...

Creative's drivers haven't been of the best quality of late, so that wouldn't be surprising.

Ok fair enough. So any thoughts? Or am I and all the other Creative Labs sound card owners stuck with this?

Note I get the same behavior whether I use the most recent sound drivers or the previous version (like 1 year old or so).

Also this only occurs with ToA not DL / DA. I also don't remember this happening when I first got ToA but who knows maybe I didn't play far enough into higher difficulty games or just never noticed it before.

As I mentioned before the behavior actually occurs even early on in the game but it nowhere near as severe as end game on a masochistic or obscene huge or gigantic galaxy game.

I also have this sound issue and it has happened all the way back to the original gal civ. I have tried a variety of sound cards with different machines with no relief. It does not make the game unplayable, but I do enjoy the soundtrack and background music. It just puts you in the game. I have also noticed that it is not only after several years, but also right from the beginning, although to a lesser extent. I have am using realtek ac97. The end of turn processing I do notice a lag later in the game, but on my system is insignificant. The audio issue is far more important to me.

I am also having these problems. hope there is a fix soon for this. Never had this problem until TA. I have tried to adjust video and sound with no effect. I would like to hear from a tech. Do they not read the board?
